Advisory, October 2026: The US State Department places Mauritania at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and marks Level 4 for military zones in the north and near the Mali and Algeria borders. The UK FCDO advises against all travel in the east and within 25 km of the Mali border, and against all but essential travel in much of the interior, including parts of Adrar and Tagant. See the FCDO warnings and check them again the week you travel.

Advisory, October 2026: The three destinations on this page are outside the areas the UK FCDO warns against. The FCDO does advise against travel to the east, the Mali border strip and much of the interior, and the US State Department rates Mauritania Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Military zones can close at short notice, so confirm with a local driver on the day. Details are in the FCDO regional risks .

Advisory, October 2026: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel in Mauritania, and the UK FCDO has no warning for Nouakchott but advises against travel to the east and the Mali border area. Tours that stay in the capital are the simplest to plan; see Canada’s advice .
Guided visits in Nouakchott are arranged privately, since the city has no sightseeing buses. A driver and guide come as a package, usually through a hotel or guesthouse.

Advisory, October 2026: The UK FCDO issues no warning for Nouakchott. The US State Department rates Mauritania Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and Canada advises avoiding the Cinquième district after dark, so schedule sights for daylight. Read the Canada advice for current detail.
Sights in Nouakchott are spread out, and a taxi between them is more realistic than walking. This planner groups them by what you can do at each one, including the places where non-Muslims stay outside.

Travel advice as of October 2026: Mauritania is rated Level 3, Reconsider Travel, by the US State Department, and Level 4 applies to military-designated zones. The FCDO does not warn against Nouakchott but does warn against travel to the east and the Mali border strip. Read the US advisory and the FCDO page before you fly.
Nouakchott rewards a plan built around the clock. The livestock market is a morning sight, the craft quarter works well at midday and the fishing beach peaks in the late afternoon.

Advisory, October 2026: The UK FCDO has no warning for Nouakchott, while the US State Department rates Mauritania Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and Canada advises avoiding unpatrolled beaches and the Cinquième district after dark. Current detail is on the FCDO page .
This is a capital of sand and Islamic law, and the options for couples are modest. There are no luxury resorts, no cocktail bars and no nightlife. What is on offer is slow and quiet: sunset over the Atlantic, tea, good food and art.

Advisory, October 2026: Canada advises avoiding the Cinquième district after dark and unpatrolled beaches, and the US rates Mauritania Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Nouakchott itself carries no FCDO warning. Walk by day; the FCDO warnings have current detail.
A walking tour in the European sense does not suit Nouakchott. The city is a sprawl of wide sandy avenues with few paved footpaths, deep sand at the verge, fast traffic and few crossings, and afternoon heat often above 40 degrees.
