Addis Ababa: 5-Day Itinerary

Travel advisory: Ethiopia is in an active conflict, with fighting in the north resumed in late September 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions, and the US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). Check the current UK FCDO and US State Department advice before you book and again before you fly. Addis Ababa itself is not in the FCDO’s advise-against list, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, crime hotspots including Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto, and security checkpoints. This guide covers Addis Ababa and the Bishoftu corridor only; the northern historic sites are not currently visitable.

Things to Know:

  • Currency: Ethiopian Birr (ETB). USD is widely accepted but change might not be readily available.
  • Visa: Most nationalities require a visa. Apply through the official e-visa portal at www.evisa.gov.et before you travel.
  • Language: Amharic is the official language. English is spoken in tourist areas.

Transportation:

  • Taxis: Use hotel transfers or yellow or app-based taxis rather than blue-and-white ones, and negotiate the price before getting in.
  • Ride-hailing Apps: Ride hailing apps like Zayride and Taxiye are available.
  • Minibuses (Bajaj): Shared taxis, cheap but can be crowded.

  • Luxury: Sheraton Addis Ababa, Hilton Addis Ababa

Day 1: Historical Exploration

  • Morning: Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia (see Lucy’s skeleton!), followed by the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
  • Afternoon: Explore the Ethnographic Museum, showcasing Ethiopian traditions and culture.
  • Evening: Enjoy traditional Ethiopian cuisine at Yod Abyssinia or Habesha 2000.

Day 2: Cityscape & Shopping

  • Morning: Drive up Mount Entoto for panoramic views of Addis Ababa. Visit the Entoto Maryam Church and the museum dedicated to Emperor Menelik II. The FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot, so go by car in daytime and in company.
  • Afternoon: Shop for souvenirs and Ethiopian coffee at Merkato, Africa’s largest open-air market, in daytime with a guide and minimal valuables (pickpocketing is common, and it is best avoided after dark).
  • Evening: Relax and enjoy a coffee ceremony at Tomoca Coffee.

Day 3: Nature & Art

  • Morning: Visit the Addis Ababa Zoo, home to various animals native to Ethiopia.
  • Afternoon: Explore the art scene at the Yeka Gallery or the Desta Gallery.
  • Evening: Enjoy live music and Ethiopian food at Fendika@Hyatt on Meskel Square or the African Jazz Village at the Ghion Hotel, travelling door to door by car and checking the schedule first.

Day 4: Religious & Cultural Immersion

  • Morning: Visit the historic Mosque of Addis Ababa, one of the oldest mosques in Ethiopia.
  • Afternoon: Attend a traditional coffee ceremony at a local home (ask your hotel or guide for recommendations).
  • Evening: Watch a performance by the Ethiopian National Theatre, showcasing traditional music and dance.

Day 5: Day Trip & Departure

  • Morning: Take a day trip by hired car to Debre Zeyit (Bishoftu), about 48 to 62 km southeast on the Addis-Adama Expressway and known for its crater lakes. Enjoy a boat ride or relax by the lake, and stay on the expressway corridor.
  • Afternoon: Return to Addis Ababa before dark, pick up last souvenirs in Piassa, and prepare for your departure.

Tips:

  • Bargain is expected in markets and with taxis.
  • Dress modestly when visiting religious sites.
  • Drink bottled water and avoid tap water.
  • Learn some basic Amharic phrases.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and take precautions against petty theft.
