Bratislava in 3 Days on a Budget (+ Vienna)

3 days: the city core, then a full day in Vienna
Two days cover Bratislava’s own sights at an easy pace, then Day 3 hands the whole day to Vienna, an hour away by train, one of the closest capital-to-capital hops in Europe. Expect roughly 55-100 EUR a person per day in the city itself, plus the Vienna train fare and whatever Vienna’s own museum prices add on top. Need less time in the city or more of it? The 2-day itinerary covers just the core, and the 5-day itinerary stretches this same plan to add Devín Castle and the wine towns.
Day 1: The castle hill and the Old Town
Start at Bratislava Castle : the hilltop grounds and Baroque gardens are free, only the Slovak National Museum’s interior exhibits carry a separate ticket (confirm the current price at snm.sk before you queue). Worth knowing before you climb up: the white four-towered building is a 20th-century reconstruction, rebuilt from 1957 after an 1811 fire gutted it, not an unbroken medieval original. Walk down into the Old Town for Hlavné námestie (Main Square), free, where the Old Town Hall’s foundation wall still holds an 1809 Napoleon cannonball and the 1572 Roland Fountain stands at the centre. Pass through St. Michael’s Gate, the only surviving medieval city gate, free from the street, with a modest separate ticket for the 6th-floor tower balcony. Finish at St. Martin’s Cathedral, the Gothic coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary where 11 kings and 8 queens and consorts were crowned 1563-1830; the interior carries a modest entry fee outside Mass times.

Tip: eat lunch a few streets off the Main Square, not on it, a hospoda (traditional pub) charges noticeably less for the same bryndzové halušky.
Day 2: The Blue Church, the UFO Bridge and Slavín
Walk or tram to the Blue Church (Church of St. Elizabeth), Ödön Lechner’s powder-blue Art Nouveau parish church, free to step inside during open hours; dress respectfully, it’s an active Catholic church. Find Čumil, the bronze “Man at Work” statue on Panská Street, free to photograph, a laborer despite the common mix-up with a soldier. Head to the UFO Bridge: the silhouette and the Danube riverbank views below cost nothing, while the saucer-shaped observation deck up top charges a separate lift ticket, roughly 12 EUR, refunded against your bill if you eat at the restaurant up there (verify current price). The bridge’s construction in the 1960s-70s demolished the historic Jewish quarter that once stood beneath the castle, worth a quiet moment before you move on. Climb to the Slavín memorial in the afternoon, a Soviet WWII cemetery and hilltop viewpoint, free, with sweeping views back over the whole Old Town.

Tip: save the UFO Bridge lift ticket for clear weather, the view isn’t worth the price under grey skies.
Day 3: Vienna, the day trip that makes Bratislava easy to add on
Catch the hourly REX regional train from Bratislava hlavná stanica, no reservation needed or possible, roughly 12.70 EUR each way, journey time about 56 minutes to an hour. That leaves a full day in Vienna for Stephansdom, the Hofburg or a wander through the historic centre, before the same train back in the evening. Prefer the water? The seasonal Twin City Liner catamaran covers the same route in about 75 minutes, a scenic but pricier alternative running 4-5 times a day May-September. Pack a light bag rather than luggage, since you’re back in Bratislava that same night.

Tip: buy the REX ticket the same day, it’s valid on any train that day and doesn’t need booking ahead.
Getting around on 3 days
The Old Town, the castle hill and the Blue Church all sit within a comfortable walk of each other. A DPB single ticket, roughly 1.09-1.60 EUR depending on the ride length, covers the odd tram hop to the UFO Bridge or Slavín. Book the Vienna leg loosely, not tightly: check the REX timetable the night before rather than pre-booking a fixed train, since same-day tickets are the norm on this route.
