Day 1: the Markt, the Burg, and the canals
Start in the Markt, free to stand in, ringed by stepped-gable guild houses with the Belfry rising behind them; climb its 366 steps for a rooftop panorama if the queue looks manageable (ticketed, verify current price and hours). Walk to the Burg to see the Gothic Stadhuis, begun in 1376, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood next door, free to enter as a place of worship. Spend the afternoon on the canal quaysides, ending at the Rozenhoedkaai, the single most-photographed bend in the city, free the whole way. Lunch is a frituur cone of fries, the cheapest hot meal in the historic centre.

Day 2: Michelangelo, the museums, and the Begijnhof
Visit the Church of Our Lady for Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child, the only Michelangelo sculpture to leave Italy in his lifetime, in an 18th-century side chapel (the nave is free, the chapel/museum area a modest fee, verify current price). The church’s own brick tower, at 115.6m, is the third-tallest brickwork church tower in the world, not the second, a detail worth getting right if you repeat it. Spend the rest of the morning at the Groeningemuseum for the Flemish Primitives, Van Eyck, Bosch, Memling. In the afternoon, walk south to Minnewater and the Begijnhof, both free, quiet, and part of a separate UNESCO listing (“Flemish Béguinages,” 1998) from the historic centre’s own 2000 inscription. Finish at Choco-Story, admission around €14 (verify), for the chocolate history and a taste before you buy.

Getting around on 2 days: do you need transit at all?
No, most likely. The historic core is flat and small enough to cross on foot in under half an hour, and both days above are entirely walkable. Save any transit budget for a bike rental, roughly €8 for 4 hours or €12 for a full day (verify), if you want to reach the ramparts windmills before you leave.
