Cologne as a Base: 3 Days on a Budget
Three days: Cologne, then two real Rhineland trips
Three days doubles the day-trip half of a Cologne-as-a-base plan: a landing day, then Brühl’s palace and Bonn’s old capital back to back. It nests directly into the 2-day version by dropping Bonn, or the 4 , 5 , 6 and 7-day plans by adding Düsseldorf, Aachen, the Rhine and the Ruhr on top. For a Cologne-only 3 days, the in-city itinerary covers the Dom, the museums and the brauhaus circuit instead.
Book these before you go:
- Cologne hotel near the Hauptbahnhof , the departure point for both day trips.
- Compare Brühl and Augustusburg Palace tours for a guided option instead of DIY timing.
- Compare Bonn day trips from Cologne if you’d rather skip the regional-train transfer.
| Day | Focus | Distance / train time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Cologne: arrival and logistics | base | KVB day ticket EUR 8.40 |
| Day 2 | Brühl: Augustusburg Palace | ~15-20 min S-Bahn/RE | EUR 9.50 palace entry |
| Day 3 | Bonn: Beethoven-Haus | ~20-26 min RE | roughly EUR 8-9 train, EUR 10 museum |
Day 1: Cologne, arrival and logistics
Land at Cologne Bonn Airport and take the S19 into Köln Hauptbahnhof, about 15 minutes, EUR 3.50 single or EUR 8.40 for a day ticket. The station sits right beside the Cathedral; walk out the north exit and its west facade is the first thing you see. Base yourself near the Hauptbahnhof, since every day trip on this itinerary leaves from the same platform, and check the Rheinlandtarif zone map before buying single tickets for Brühl and Bonn. Spend the afternoon on the free Altstadt and Rhine promenade; the in-city guide has the Dom tower climb and brauhaus picks if you want to add a second Cologne day later.
Day 2: Brühl, Augustusburg Palace
Brühl is 15-20 minutes out by S-Bahn or regional train. Augustusburg Palace, UNESCO-listed since 1984, runs guided-tour-only entry: EUR 9.50 adult, EUR 8 reduced, or EUR 15 combined with the Falkenlust hunting lodge. Check current tour times before you go; the palace closes December through February and slots are timed. Skip pairing it with Phantasialand theme park next door; that’s a full day on its own, presale tickets from around EUR 35.
Day 3: Bonn, Beethoven-Haus and the old capital
Bonn is 20-26 minutes away by regional train, roughly EUR 8-9 one-way. It was West Germany’s federal capital from 1949 to 1990, and Beethoven-Haus marks his birthplace: EUR 10 adult, EUR 6 reduced, free under 19. The Museumsmeile and the old government quarter sit a bus or tram ride from the Hauptbahnhof rather than a walkable extension of a compact old town, so budget the transit time. A half day covers it comfortably; no need to overnight.
Which day trip should come first, Brühl or Bonn?
Brühl, since it’s the shorter trip and a good half day, leaving you time to head back to Cologne for the evening. Bonn on Day 3 works better as a fuller day, since Beethoven-Haus plus the Museumsmeile bus ride takes longer to do properly than the palace visit does.
Is a single day ticket cheaper than two separate train fares?
For two day trips inside a few days, buying single Rheinlandtarif fares each morning is usually cheapest; a Deutschland-Ticket only starts paying off once you’re doing four or more regional trips in a month, which this 3-day plan doesn’t reach yet.
Carry cash for Brühl’s smaller cafes and Bonn’s old-town stalls; card acceptance is improving but not universal outside central Cologne.
