4 days: honestly, a city day plus 2 real day trips
Colombo’s own sightseeing is genuinely a 1-2 day affair, so a straight 4 days in the city would mean padding the itinerary with repeat ground. This route is honest about that: one full day for the free city core, two separate day trips (Galle by coastal train, Kandy by early train), and a slower closing day at Mount Lavinia and the food scene. Day 1: Fort, Pettah, and Galle Face
Walk Colombo Fort’s colonial core (the Old Dutch Hospital’s restored exterior, free to see), then Pettah for Sea Street’s gold shops, the Kathiresan Kovils, the 1749 Wolvendaal Church, and the candy-striped Red Mosque. Visit Gangaramaya Temple (roughly LKR 300, $1) and Seema Malaka next door (free, a 1976 Bawa rebuild), keeping the two enforced rules in mind: never pose with your back to a Buddha statue, and cover any Buddha tattoo. Spend the National Museum’s roughly LKR 1,200 ($3.60) if it’s open, then close at Galle Face Green’s sunset street-food stalls.

Day 2: Galle by the coastal train
The Fort-to-Galle coastal train (roughly 1.5-2 hours) runs feet from the ocean most of the way, a genuine highlight rather than just transport. Galle’s UNESCO Dutch Fort is free to wander end to end. Aim for an early train out and a mid-afternoon train back.

Day 3: Kandy, a long but doable day
Kandy is roughly 2.5-3 hours each way by train, workable as a day trip only with an early departure; many visitors prefer an overnight instead, so treat this as the more ambitious day on the route. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic costs roughly LKR 1,500 (about $4.50). Grab lunch near the temple and catch a return train that gets you back before dark rather than pushing the last departure.

Day 4: Mount Lavinia and a slower food day
After 2 straight day trips, ease off: Mount Lavinia’s beach, about 10km south by local train or PickMe, is the closest genuine swimming spot. Use the afternoon for a proper sit-down meal, Green Cabin’s lamprais (a specific Dutch-Burgher dish, order ahead) or Upali’s by Nawaloka for casual rice and curry, and close the trip at Barefoot Gallery in Colombo 3, free to browse, live jazz on Sundays.

Getting around on 4 days
Day 1 is fully walkable. Days 2 and 3 run on the train, the cheapest way to cover either route. Day 4 needs a short PickMe or local train out to Mount Lavinia; there’s no Grab in Sri Lanka, so confirm the fare in the app before getting in. Check the current poya calendar before planning a night out on any of these evenings, alcohol sales pause nationwide by law roughly 12-13 times a year. Book the Kandy train early rather than the day of if your dates fall near a holiday; Galle’s coastal train is easier to book same-day.
