Day 1: acclimatize around the free Plaza de Armas sights
Take today slow: Cusco sits at roughly 3,400m, and altitude sickness tends to hit on arrival, not later. Hydrate, skip alcohol, and consider coca tea, a legal Andean ritual, though rest and time do the real work. The Plaza de Armas itself is free, ringed by the Cathedral and La Compañía de Jesús. Walk to Qorikancha, the Inca Temple of the Sun with the Santo Domingo convent built on its walls (roughly S/15, about $4), then uphill to San Blas, the artisan quarter, and its free viewpoint, a genuinely steep climb at this altitude, so pace it.

Day 2: the ruins above town, then San Pedro Market
Buy a Boleto Turístico Partial (roughly S/70, about $19), COSITUC, cash in soles only, not sold online, and use it on one circuit: Sacsayhuamán, the megalithic fortress above the city (no separate ticket exists, Boleto only), plus Q’enqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay. Stop at Cristo Blanco, free, for the view down over Cusco. In the afternoon, head to San Pedro Market, free to browse, for a cheap set lunch (roughly S/8-12, about $2-4) and a last look at the Twelve-Angled Stone on the way back, also free.

Getting around on 2 days without overspending
Everything on this route sits within a short taxi ride or walk of the historic center, so there’s no need for anything beyond a single Boleto Turístico circuit and occasional taxi fares. Keep cash in soles on hand, since the Boleto is cash-only and most colectivos and market stalls don’t take cards.
Pace both days around the altitude, not the clock. If you feel rough on Day 1, push the San Blas climb to later in the afternoon rather than skipping it, and check for any protest or transport-strike advisories before you build a tighter schedule around this trip.
