Four days in Dubrovnik: the budget version

Four days adds a genuine beach day in Lapad on top of the Old Town, Srdj, and museum basics, and it still stays inside the city on purpose: Split alone eats 6-12 hours round trip, which is real money and time this plan doesn’t spend. Day 1: Old Town first look, walls and Stradun

Morning: walk the City Walls at opening, roughly 8am in peak season, before the heat and the crowds. The full circuit takes 1.5-2 hours, and EUR 40 buys the same view at opening as it does at noon, minus the queue and the sun; Fort Lovrijenac is included in the ticket for the next 3 days too. Midday: walk the Stradun end to end, free, stopping at Onofrio’s Large Fountain and browsing the Sponza Palace’s loggia from the street. Order lunch a street back from the Stradun-facing terraces; the identical Dalmatian menu runs EUR 15-20 less per plate one row in. Evening: a Buza Bar drink, roughly EUR 4-7, on the cliffs as the light goes, then dinner at a konoba off the main strip.

Day 2: Srdj views and Lokrum Island

Morning: hike the free Srdj switchback trail, 45-60 minutes, instead of paying roughly EUR 30 for the cable car return. Same summit view over the walled Old Town, plus the Homeland War museum in Fort Imperial at the top. Afternoon: ferry to Lokrum Island (the combined ferry-and-reserve ticket runs roughly EUR 30 per adult) for the botanical garden, the Benedictine monastery ruins, and the saltwater lake, a genuine break from Old Town crowds. Evening: dinner in Gruz or Lapad, EUR 15-30 a person, noticeably cheaper than the equivalent Old Town meal.

Day 3: Fort Lovrijenac and museums on the Pass

Morning: revisit Fort Lovrijenac, already covered by your Walls ticket for 3 days, for the clifftop Game of Thrones filming-location view without paying its standalone EUR 15 entry. If you skipped the Dubrovnik Pass on Day 1, pick one up now, EUR 40-50 depending on validity, and spend it on the Rector’s Palace, the Maritime Museum, and the Franciscan Monastery’s pharmacy museum, which has been operating since 1317. Afternoon: walk out to Ploce and the free zone of Banje Beach for a swim with a view back at the walls. Evening: the Old Town after 9pm, once the cruise-ship crowds have sailed, for a quieter last look at the Stradun.

Rough spend, 2 people: EUR 60-100, less if the Pass was already bought on Day 1.

Day 4: Beaches and Lapad

Morning: a slower start; walk or bus out to Sveti Jakov Beach, a pebble beach with real views and none of Banje’s paid-lounger pressure. Afternoon: the Lapad peninsula promenade (Setaliste kralja Zvonimira), its own pebble beach, and noticeably cheaper cafes and restaurants than the Old Town. Evening: dinner in Lapad, EUR 15-30 a person, before an early night ahead of departure.

Is 4 days enough time for Dubrovnik?

For a first visit, yes, comfortably: the Walls, Srdj, Lokrum, museums, and a real beach day all fit without feeling rushed. What it skips is a rest day with nothing scheduled and a paid extra like a sea kayak tour; the 7-day plan adds both.

How much does 4 days in Dubrovnik actually cost?

Figure roughly EUR 290-450 total for two people at a budget-to-mid-range hotel in Lapad or Gruz: four nights, the Walls and cable-car-alternative admissions, a Dubrovnik Pass, and real meals with one or two Old Town splurges. Staying inside the Old Town walls and eating there daily pushes that closer to EUR 550-750 for the same four days.

Getting around on foot and by bus

The Old Town is entirely car-free and small enough to cross end to end in 15 minutes. A Libertas bus ticket to Lapad or Gruz costs roughly EUR 1.73 bought ahead at a kiosk, versus EUR 2.50-2.99 paid to the driver, valid about 60 minutes with transfers. Check current visitor info, including cruise ship schedules for the day, on the official tourist board site before locking in Day 1’s wall-walk timing.

Put the beach day last, not first. Sveti Jakov and Lapad are still there on Day 4 regardless of weather earlier in the week, while the Walls and Lokrum ferries are the two bookings actually worth protecting against a rained-out morning.
