Eritrea: A 3-Day Itinerary

Visa Requirements: Most nationalities require a visa to enter Eritrea. Apply well in advance through Eritrean embassies or consulates.

Transportation: Taxis and minibuses (buses) are the primary modes of transportation within cities and towns. For longer distances, consider renting a car with a driver.

Currency: The Nakfa (ERN) is the official currency. US dollars are widely accepted but bring crisp bills as tattered ones may be refused. Credit cards are not widely used.

  • The official languages are Tigrinya, Arabic, and English. Learning basic greetings in Tigrinya will be appreciated.

Day 2: Ancient Ruins and Coastal Beauty

  • Morning: Take a day trip to Qohaito, an ancient archaeological site with well-preserved ruins dating back to the pre-Christian era. Explore the towering stelae and rock-cut tombs.

  • Afternoon: Drive along the scenic Red Sea coast to Massawa, Eritrea’s historic port city. Visit the Ottoman architecture of the old town, including the impressive Khulafa al Rashidin Mosque.

  • Evening: Enjoy fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant in Massawa and watch the sunset over the Red Sea.

Day 3: Nature and Departure
