4-Day Ethiopia Itinerary: History, Culture & Coffee in Addis Ababa

Travel advisory: Ethiopia is in an active conflict, with fighting in the north resumed in late September 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions, and the US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). Check the current UK FCDO and US State Department advice before you book and again before you fly. Addis Ababa itself is not in the FCDO’s advise-against list, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, crime hotspots including Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto, and security checkpoints. This guide covers Addis Ababa and the Bishoftu corridor only; the northern historic sites are not currently visitable.

This itinerary is based in Addis Ababa, the one part of Ethiopia that most travellers can currently reach without entering an area the UK FCDO advises against. It covers history, culture and the city’s coffee and market scene.

Visa Requirements: Most nationalities require a visa to enter Ethiopia. Apply through the official e-visa portal at www.evisa.gov.et before you travel.

Currency: Ethiopian Birr (ETB), at about 160 to 165 birr to the US dollar in October 2026. Carry cash birr for taxis, markets and small shops.

Transportation: Use hotel transfers or yellow or app-based taxis rather than blue-and-white ones. Ethiopian Airlines has halted flights to Tigray, and the FCDO says northern flights may be suspended or cancelled at short notice, so this itinerary does not use domestic flights.

Things to Know:

  • Ethiopia is a predominantly Orthodox Christian country, so dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites.
  • Bargaining is common in markets and with taxi drivers.
  • Drink bottled water only.
  • Addis Ababa sits at about 2,355 m, so take it easy on your first day and drink plenty of water.
  • The UK FCDO warns of a high terrorism threat and crime hotspots including Bole Medhanealem, Meskel Square and Entoto. Travel door to door by car after dark.

Day 1: Addis Ababa - History & Culture

  • Morning: Arrive at Bole International Airport (ADD). Exchange currency and arrange a hotel transfer.
  • Afternoon: Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia in Arat Kilo to see the cast of Lucy, a 3.2 million-year-old hominid fossil, and the museum’s other collections.
  • Evening: Enjoy traditional Ethiopian cuisine at a restaurant such as Yod Abyssinia in Bole, going there and back by car.

Day 2: Addis Ababa - Arat Kilo & Unity Park

  • Morning: Visit Unity Park, open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Monday. Foreigner tickets are reported at about US$20 for regular entry and US$50 for the guided ticket; confirm at the gate. Inside are the Black Lion Zoo, a larger zoo, a botanical centre and the throne hall.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Ethnological Museum at Sidist Kilo, the former palace of Haile Selassie, where his bedroom and bathroom can be seen.
  • Evening: Have dinner near your hotel and return before dark.

Day 3: Piassa & Entoto

  • Morning: Visit St George’s Cathedral and the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Piassa, then have a coffee at Tomoca’s Piassa branch. Stay in company and keep to daytime.
  • Afternoon: Drive up to Entoto Maryam Church and its museum for views over the city. The FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot, so go by car in daytime and in company.
  • Evening: Listen to Ethio-jazz at the African Jazz Village at the Ghion Hotel (reported Thursday nights, late start) or Fendika@Hyatt on Meskel Square, travelling door to door by car.

Day 4: Departure

  • Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a last coffee ceremony at a Galani Coffee cafe before your transfer to Bole International Airport.

Optional Extensions:

  • Spend a day at the Bishoftu crater lakes, about 48 to 62 km southeast on the Addis-Adama Expressway, and stay on that corridor.
  • Lalibela, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Axum are in Amhara and Tigray, where the UK FCDO advises against all travel, so they are not part of this itinerary.
