7-Day Ethiopian Adventure: Culture, History & Nature
Visa Requirements: Most nationalities require a visa to enter Ethiopia. You can obtain a visa on arrival at Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa for $50 USD. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining.
Transportation: Domestic flights are available but can be expensive. Buses are the most common and affordable mode of transport, though journeys can be long. Hiring a car with a driver is another option for more flexibility.
Currency: Ethiopian Birr (ETB). USD and Euros are accepted in some places, but it’s best to exchange currency upon arrival.
Day 1: Addis Ababa - Arrival & City Exploration
- Morning: Arrive at Bole International Airport and obtain your visa on arrival. Transfer to your hotel.
- Afternoon: Explore Addis Ababa, visiting the National Museum (home to Lucy skeleton), Holy Trinity Cathedral, and Merkato (one of Africa’s largest open-air markets).
- Evening: Enjoy traditional Ethiopian dinner and music at a local restaurant like Yod Abyssinia.
Day 2: Axum - Ancient History & Archaeological Wonders
- Morning: Fly to Axum (AXU) from Addis Ababa.
- Afternoon: Visit the ancient stelae, monolithic obelisks dating back to the Axumite Empire. Explore the ruins of the palace of King Ezana and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, said to house the Ark of the Covenant.
Day 3: Lalibela - Rock-Hewn Churches & Spiritual Immersion
- Morning: Fly from Axum to Lalibela (LLI).
- Afternoon: Marvel at the eleven monolithic rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore these architectural wonders and learn about their historical significance.
Day 4: Gondar - Castles & Imperial Legacy
- Morning: Fly from Lalibela to Gondar (GDZ).
- Afternoon: Visit the impressive Fasil Ghebbi, a complex of palaces, churches, and monasteries built by Ethiopian emperors in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Day 5: Simien Mountains National Park - Trekking & Wildlife Encounters
- Morning: Depart Gondar for Simien Mountains National Park.
- Afternoon: Embark on a trek through this breathtaking mountain landscape, home to endemic wildlife like the gelada baboon and Ethiopian wolf. Enjoy stunning views and encounter local communities.
Day 6: Lake Tana - Monastery Hopping & Boat Trip
- Morning: Fly from Gondar to Bahir Dar (BHD) and transfer to Lake Tana.
- Afternoon: Visit the Zege Peninsula, exploring ancient monasteries hidden on secluded islands. Take a traditional boat trip across the lake and enjoy the serene beauty of its surroundings.
Day 7: Departure
- Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before transferring to Bahir Dar Airport (BHD) for your flight back to Addis Ababa and onward journey.

Ethiopia is predominantly Christian Orthodox, with Islam also practiced. Respect local customs and dress modestly when visiting religious sites.

The climate varies significantly depending on altitude. Pack layers and be prepared for both warm days and cool nights.
