7-Day Ethiopia Itinerary: Culture, History & Lakes from Addis Ababa

Travel advisory: Ethiopia is in an active conflict, with fighting in the north resumed in late September 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions, and the US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3 (Reconsider Travel). Check the current UK FCDO and US State Department advice before you book and again before you fly. Addis Ababa itself is not in the FCDO’s advise-against list, but it warns of a high terrorism threat, crime hotspots including Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto, and security checkpoints. This guide covers Addis Ababa and the Bishoftu corridor only; the northern historic sites are not currently visitable.

This itinerary stays in Addis Ababa and the Bishoftu corridor, the parts of Ethiopia that are not covered by the UK FCDO’s advice against travel.

Visa Requirements: Most nationalities require a visa to enter Ethiopia. Apply through the official e-visa portal at www.evisa.gov.et before you travel, and make sure your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining.

Transportation: Use hotel transfers or yellow or app-based taxis rather than blue-and-white ones, and hire a car with a driver for day trips. Ethiopian Airlines has halted flights to Tigray, and the FCDO says northern flights may be suspended or cancelled at short notice.

Currency: Ethiopian Birr (ETB), at about 160 to 165 birr to the US dollar in October 2026. Carry cash birr for taxis, markets and small shops.

Day 1: Addis Ababa - Arrival & City Orientation

  • Morning: Arrive at Bole International Airport and transfer to your hotel.
  • Afternoon: Visit the National Museum of Ethiopia in Arat Kilo, home to the cast of Lucy, and take it easy at altitude.
  • Evening: Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner at a restaurant such as Yod Abyssinia, going there and back by car.

Day 2: Addis Ababa - Unity Park

  • Morning: Visit Unity Park in Arat Kilo, open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Monday. Foreigner tickets are reported at about US$20 for regular entry and US$50 for the guided ticket; confirm at the gate.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Ethnological Museum at Sidist Kilo, the former palace of Haile Selassie.

Day 3: Addis Ababa - Holy Trinity & Piassa

  • Morning: Visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, where Haile Selassie and Empress Menen are buried. It is a solemn place, so dress modestly.
  • Afternoon: Visit St George’s Cathedral and the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Piassa, then have a coffee at Tomoca’s Piassa branch. Keep to daytime and stay in company.

Day 4: Addis Ababa - Entoto

  • Morning: Drive up to Entoto Maryam Church and its museum, where Menelik II was crowned in 1889. The FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot, so go by car in daytime and in company.
  • Afternoon: Browse handwoven cotton and shawls at Shiro Meda on Entoto Road, where vendors often quote visitors higher prices.

Day 5: Bishoftu Crater Lakes

  • Morning: Drive about 48 to 62 km southeast on the Addis-Adama Expressway to Bishoftu (Debre Zeit), about an hour to an hour and a half from the city.
  • Afternoon: Take a boat on Lake Hora or relax at the Kuriftu Resort & Spa, then return before dark. Stay on the expressway corridor and do not travel on to Adama or Awash.

Day 6: Addis Ababa - Coffee & Music

  • Morning: Visit the Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum at the east end of Meskel Square, a memorial to those killed in the Red Terror under the Derg. Guided tours are free and a donation is customary; visit in a respectful frame of mind.
  • Afternoon: Enjoy a three-round coffee ceremony at a Galani Coffee cafe.
  • Evening: Hear live music at Fendika@Hyatt on Meskel Square, travelling door to door by car.

Day 7: Departure

  • Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a last browse for souvenirs in Piassa before transferring to Bole International Airport for your flight.

Things to Know:

  • Ethiopia is predominantly Christian Orthodox, with Islam also practised. Respect local customs and dress modestly when visiting religious sites.
  • Addis Ababa sits at about 2,355 m, so pace yourself and drink plenty of water.
  • Bargaining is customary in markets. Be polite but firm in your negotiations.
  • Try traditional Ethiopian food, served on injera (a spongy flatbread) with a variety of flavourful stews and vegetables.
  • The UK FCDO warns of a high terrorism threat and crime hotspots including Bole Medhanealem, Meskel Square and Entoto. Travel door to door by car after dark.

Not on this itinerary:

  • Axum, Lalibela, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lake Tana are in Tigray and Amhara, where the UK FCDO advises against all travel, so they are not part of this itinerary.
  • Awash National Park is beyond the Addis-Adama Expressway corridor, and the FCDO flags attacks on vehicles on the A1, so it is not part of this itinerary.
