Day 1: Meknes and Volubilis by train and taxi
Take an early ONCF train from Fes Ville to Meknes, 45 minutes to an hour, roughly 30-90 MAD one way. Cover Bab Mansour and the Meknes medina in the morning, then a shared grand taxi (roughly 10-20 MAD per seat) or a chartered round trip (roughly 400-500 MAD for the car) out to Moulay Idriss and the Archaeological Site of Volubilis . Evening train back to Fes.
Day 2: Ifrane and Azrou, the Middle Atlas on a day trip
Ifrane, 1.5-2 hours out, runs alpine-chalet architecture and genuine winter snow; Azrou’s cedar forest 20 minutes further has resident Barbary macaques. Charter a grand taxi for the day (roughly 500-700 MAD, cheaper split among a group) or book a shared-group tour (roughly €45-60 per person, transport and lunch included). Back to Fes for the evening.
Day 3: Sefrou, then a genuinely free afternoon
Sefrou is a 30-40 minute grand taxi ride, roughly 20-30 MAD for a shared seat or 120-200 MAD to charter the car. Its own walled medina and historic Mellah take half a day, less touristed than Fes itself; the town’s Cherry Festival runs mid-June and is UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage-listed. Be back in Fes by early afternoon; use the rest of the day to rest, not to squeeze in a sixth destination.
Day 4: Rest day, then departure
Keep this day loose. If you’ve got energy left, the Fes budget guide lists the city’s cheap and free sights for a light final morning; otherwise pack, confirm your onward transport, and treat this as recovery time after three straight days of grand taxis and train platforms.
Is 4 days enough for Fes day trips?
For Meknes, Volubilis, Ifrane, Azrou, and Sefrou, yes, comfortably, with a genuine rest day built in. What it does not cover is Chefchaouen, a 4.5-hour bus ride each way that needs its own overnight, or the Sahara, a 2 to 3 day tour on top of everything else. Trying to wedge either into this 4-day frame means cutting one of the day trips above, not adding a sixth thing.
How much does a 4-day Fes-based itinerary cost?
Figure 1,800-2,400 MAD ($194-258) total for a solo traveler: four riad nights, the Meknes train and taxi legs, an Ifrane and Azrou charter or tour, and the Sefrou taxi. Sharing the Ifrane charter and the Volubilis round trip with other travelers, rather than booking each as a private car, is the single biggest cost lever across these four days.
