Before you land
Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) sits in Vantaa, a separate municipality about 19km north of the centre. The Ring Rail Line runs both ways, the P line about 28 minutes clockwise, the I line about 33 minutes the other direction, both covered by one ABC-zone ticket. Visitors from the US, UK, Canada or Australia don’t need anything beyond a passport yet; the EU’s new ETIAS entry system is confirmed for a Q4 2026 launch but isn’t mandatory until a transition period ends around April 2027, worth a check closer to your dates.
Day 1: arrival and Suomenlinna
Ride the Ring Rail Line in on an ABC ticket (EUR 4.40 via the HSL app, EUR 4.80 paying contactless), and settle into a budget room around Kamppi or Kallio. Head to Market Square for the Suomenlinna ferry , a normal AB single ticket (EUR 3.30 app, EUR 3.50 contactless) on the regular HSL network, not a separate paid tour boat. The 15-minute crossing lands you on the fortress island, free to wander the ramparts and walking paths; add the Suomenlinna Museum for about EUR 10 if you want the history filled in. Ferry back for an early dinner before the day trips start.
Day 2: Porvoo
Porvoo is the easiest day trip from Helsinki. A direct bus from the Kamppi terminal covers the roughly 45-50 minutes each way, with fares running from about EUR 2 to EUR 7 on budget operators like OnniBus up to around EUR 13 on a standard ticket, worth comparing before you book. The reward is Porvoo’s Old Town: rows of red, yellow and ochre wooden houses lining the Porvoonjoki river, a genuine 18th and 19th century townscape rather than a rebuilt one. Day 3: Nuuksio National Park
Nuuksio is the closest real Finnish wilderness to the city. An HSL commuter train to Espoo Centre (about 25 minutes) connects to bus 245 or 245A (another 25-30 minutes) for a door-to-door time under an hour, and a combined fare of roughly EUR 5-10 on the wider-zone HSL ticket plus the connecting bus. Marked trails inside the park run from an easy 1.5km loop to 17km, past Haukkalampi pond and Lake Siikajarvi, with the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia at the entrance for an indoor primer and a cafe. Is 3 days enough to fit two day trips?
Yes, comfortably. Porvoo and Nuuksio are different enough, a riverside old town versus forest and lake trails, that back-to-back days don’t feel repetitive, and both keep the round-trip transit under an hour and a half. The limiting factor is daylight in winter, not the itinerary itself.
Does the Helsinki Card help on this itinerary?
Not much. The card bundles transit and museum entry inside Helsinki, but both Porvoo and the Nuuksio bus leg sit outside the core HSL zones the card covers. Pay the AB ferry fare directly for Suomenlinna and skip the card unless you’re also stacking several paid museums into the same three days.
