Izmir in 4 Days on a Budget (With Daily Costs)
A fourth day adds Pergamon, Izmir’s other UNESCO day trip, to the 3-day core, pulling the trip’s spread of ancient sites wider without adding a second city. Day 1: Kordon, Konak and the bazaar
Take the İZBAN train from the airport into Alsancak, roughly 35-40 minutes for 15-20 TRY (verify) on an İzmirim Kart. Breakfast is boyoz and gevrek from a street vendor, 40-60 TRY.
Walk the free Kordon toward Konak Square, the 1901 Clock Tower and the Yalı Mosque, then spend the afternoon in the Kemeraltı Bazaar, free to browse, with the 1744 Kızlarağası Han and Havra Sokağı tucked inside. Lunch is a kumru sandwich, 120-150 TRY.
Dinner in Alsancak runs 250-350 TRY for a casual place, or 600-900 TRY for a seafood meyhane with rakı.
Day 1 spend: roughly $25-30. Tip: buy the İzmirim Kart at the airport station, it covers everything for the rest of the trip.
Day 2: Kadifekale, Asansör and the bay
Climb Kadifekale in the morning, free, for the Mount Pagos hilltop view, then ride the Asansör and walk Dario Moreno Street, free or nominal. Visit the Agora of Smyrna, a modest ticket (verify, roughly 100-150 TRY), for the vaulted chambers beneath its Roman stoas.
Cross the bay by İZDENİZ ferry to Karşıyaka in the evening, a normal transit fare, for dinner around 200-300 TRY.
Day 2 spend: roughly $20-25. Tip: the ferry runs late enough to catch the lit-up Kordon skyline on the way back.
Day 3: Ephesus
Take the regional train from Basmane to Selçuk, about 1h20-1h30, or book the Ephesus tour above . Entry runs about €40 (verify), Terrace Houses an extra €15.
See the Library of Celsus facade, the Great Theatre, and the Temple of Artemis site, today a single column and rubble, manage expectations rather than skip it. Lunch near the site runs 150-250 TRY.
Day 3 spend: roughly $60-70. Tip: bring water and real shoes, the site offers little shade.
Day 4: Pergamon
Take the intercity bus from Izmir Otogar toward Bergama, roughly 2-2.5 hours for 150-200 TRY each way (verify), or book the Pergamon tour above if you’d rather not manage the local bus at the other end.
The Acropolis, about €15 (verify), holds one of the steepest ancient theatres known and the remains of a library once second only to Alexandria’s; a cable car covers the climb in about 15 minutes for a small additional fee (verify). The separate Asklepion healing sanctuary runs about €13 more. Lunch in Bergama town costs 150-250 TRY.
Day 4 spend: roughly $40-50 with both sites, less if you skip the Asklepion. Tip: pair the trip with lunch in Bergama town itself rather than at the site entrance, it’s noticeably cheaper.
