Johannesburg in 4 Days on a Budget

Safety first: Johannesburg has real crime risk (armed robbery, carjacking, smash-and-grab at red lights), but it isn’t a no-go city. Use Uber or Bolt instead of walking, especially downtown or after dark; take the Gautrain for the OR Tambo-Sandton-Pretoria run; keep car doors locked and stay alert at traffic lights; don’t display phones or valuables; and see Soweto and the inner city on a guided tour, not solo. Sandton, Rosebank, and Melville are the lower-risk side of the city. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you go.
Four days extends the standard history-Soweto-Cradle spine with a Pretoria day trip, easily done by Gautrain. If three days is enough, use the 3-day itinerary ; with a fifth day, the 5-day itinerary adds a Pilanesberg safari.

Day 1: Apartheid history
Morning: the Apartheid Museum (Ormonde), allow 2.5-3 hours. Entry fee conflicts across sources (roughly R85-R120, verify).
Afternoon: Constitution Hill (Braamfontein), the old Number Four and Women’s Jail beside the Constitutional Court, built from salvaged prison brick.
Evening: dinner in Melville, walkable by day, Uber out after dark.
Day 2: Soweto, guided
Full day: a proper guided Soweto tour covering Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial, which handles the 1976 Soweto Uprising soberly.
Evening: Sandton’s Nelson Mandela Square or the Neighbourgoods Market if it lands on a Saturday.
Day 3: The Cradle of Humankind
Full day: the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Sterkfontein Caves reopened in April 2025 after 2024 flooding; check current status (verify). Combo ticket with Maropeng runs roughly R175 an adult (verify).
Evening: a low-key dinner back in the city.
Day 4: Pretoria day trip
Morning: Gautrain from Park to Pretoria station, about an hour. Visit the Union Buildings and its Mandela statue, plus the Voortrekker Monument.
Afternoon: Freedom Park, and if you’re travelling around October, the jacarandas give Pretoria its “Jacaranda City” nickname.
Evening: Gautrain back to Johannesburg for a final dinner, Rosebank or Melville both work well.
