Lucerne in 4 Days: One Mountain, One Glacier
A fourth day buys you Mount Pilatus instead of just Rigi, plus a genuine glacier day trip to Titlis, so expect the mountain-fare line item to be the biggest cost by far. Budget roughly CHF 420-490 across the four days, hotel not included.

Day 1: Old Town on foot
Walk the Chapel Bridge and Water Tower, free, keeping in mind that a 1993 fire destroyed roughly two-thirds of the original 14th-century structure and most of its paintings, so what stands is an honest reconstruction rather than unbroken medieval fabric. Climb a Musegg Wall tower or two, also free, then pay respects at the Lion Monument, the sandstone memorial to the Swiss Guards killed defending Louis XVI in 1792.
Lunch runs CHF 25-40, dinner CHF 35-55 (verify). Day 1 spend: roughly CHF 60-95. End the day booking tomorrow’s Pilatus tickets online if you haven’t already, since the Golden Round Trip’s boat leg has a fixed departure time.
Day 2: Mount Pilatus
The Pilatus Bahn is the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, gradient up to 48%, from Alpnachstad. The “Golden Round Trip”, boat from Lucerne, cogwheel up, cableway down via Kriens, runs roughly CHF 119.50-140 (verify) and only operates while the cogwheel line is running its seasonal schedule, so check current dates before booking. Add CHF 40-60 for meals across the day, more if you eat at the summit restaurant rather than packing a lunch.
Day 2 spend: roughly CHF 160-200. End the day resting your legs, since tomorrow is a walking-heavy museum day.
Day 3: Culture and the lake
Visit the Swiss Museum of Transport, CHF 37 adult (verify), Switzerland’s most-visited museum, or the Rosengart Collection for its 47 Picassos and 120 Klees if art matters more to you than locomotives. Take a Lake Lucerne boat trip in the afternoon (check current SGV fares).
Day 3 spend: roughly CHF 100-130, plus whatever the boat fare runs. End the day early, since Titlis tomorrow means an earlier train than usual.
Day 4: Titlis day trip
Train to Engelberg (roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Lucerne, check current SBB fares), then the cable car to the 3,020m summit and glacier, roughly CHF 96 (verify). Note that the rotating Rotair cable car is closed 17 Aug-11 Dec 2026, with the Titlis Connect cable car covering the ascent in the meantime (verify before you go). The Cliff Walk suspension bridge and the snow park are both at the summit.
Day 4 spend: roughly CHF 135-165, plus the Engelberg train fare. End the day back in Lucerne with a proper dinner, since today’s lunch was likely a quick summit snack.
