4 days in Moldova: the core, plus a wine resort day
Four days keeps the 3-day core, Chișinău, Orheiul Vechi and Cricova, Mileștii Mici, and adds a fourth day at the Castel Mimi wine resort. Budget roughly 3,200-3,850 MDL per person across all four days. Short on time? The 3-day itinerary or 2-day itinerary drop Castel Mimi and, on the 2-day version, Mileștii Mici too. Want to go wider still? The 6-day itinerary adds Soroca and Gagauzia on top of this plan.
Book these before you go:
- A Centru-district hotel or hostel: check rates on Booking.com .
- Mileștii Mici’s tasting or tour, no walk-ins accepted: book direct through milestii-mici.md , confirmation takes roughly 48 hours.
- A Castel Mimi tour for Day 4: book direct at castelmimi.md .
- A rental car for Days 2 and 4: compare rates on Discover Cars .
Day 1: Chișinău on foot, almost everything free
Walk Ștefan cel Mare Central Park, free, then the pedestrian corridor to the Nativity of Christ Metropolitan Cathedral and the Triumphal Arch, both free, about 45-60 minutes combined; the Arch is only around 13m tall despite the comparisons. Continue to the Eternity Memorial Complex, free and open 24/7, then an hour at Valea Morilor Park, free entry. Lunch at the Central Market and flower market is cash-only but cheap: cabbage runs roughly 25-35 MDL/kg, fruit 10-16 MDL/kg. For one paid stop, the National Museum of History of Moldova is 50 MDL adult (20 MDL students/pensioners). City buses and trolleybuses charge a flat 7 MDL fare.
Rough spend: hostel bed (150-170 MDL) + market and cheap eats (90-150 MDL) + transit (20-30 MDL) + the History Museum (50 MDL) = roughly 310-400 MDL.
Day 2: Orheiul Vechi and Cricova, paired the classic way
Orheiul Vechi , 55-60km/about an hour out, costs 20 MDL (10 MDL concession) plus 30 MDL parking, no advance booking; women need a headscarf for the active cave church. Neither this nor Cricova sits on a useful transit route for a same-day round trip together, so a rental car or the combined day tour (roughly €125 per person) pairs them for you. At Cricova, the shortest tour, Underground City, starts from 400 MDL and takes about 1 h 10. Book ahead through cricova.md ; walk-ups are discouraged.
Rough spend (car, split two ways): half of a $40-50 rental (344-430 MDL) + Orheiul Vechi entry (20 MDL) + split parking (15 MDL) + Cricova’s Underground City tour (400 MDL) + Day 1’s baseline (260-350 MDL) = roughly 1,039-1,215 MDL.
Day 3: Mileștii Mici, the real Guinness World Record cellar
Cricova gets called “the world’s largest wine cellar” constantly online; it isn’t. Mileștii Mici holds the actual Guinness World Record, set in 2005, 55km of galleries, over 1.5 million bottles, and it must be pre-booked, no walk-ins. The cheapest package is the “Winery Visit,” 350 MDL for a roughly 50-minute tour with one gift bottle. It sits 16-20km south, essentially requiring a car or booked transport; a taxi over a similar distance to the airport transfer runs in a comparable bracket, roughly 130-180 MDL each way.
Rough spend: Mileștii Mici’s “Winery Visit” (350 MDL) + a taxi round trip (260-360 MDL) + the usual baseline (260-350 MDL) = roughly 870-1,060 MDL.
Day 4: Castel Mimi, a wine resort east of the capital
Castel Mimi, at Strada Dacia 1 in Bulboaca (Anenii Noi), sits about 35 km east of Chișinău and is open to visitors every day. Its shortest tour, the Family/Simbol, runs about 1 h 10 and starts from 400 MDL; the Iconic tour (5 wines, about 1 h 30) is 850 MDL on weekdays and 950 at weekends. Book through castelmimi.md . Reach it by car, taxi or tour. If you are driving, treat the drink-driving limit as zero and pick a designated driver or take a taxi on the tasting day.
Rough spend (rental car split two ways, as on Day 2): half of a $40-50 rental (344-430 MDL) + the Family/Simbol tour (400 MDL) + the usual baseline (260-350 MDL) = roughly 1,004-1,180 MDL.
What 4 days in Moldova actually costs
| Day | Focus | Rough cost per person (MDL) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chișinău free sights + History Museum | 310-400 |
| 2 | Orheiul Vechi + Cricova, rental car split two ways | 1,039-1,215 |
| 3 | Mileștii Mici, cheapest tour package | 870-1,060 |
| 4 | Castel Mimi, Family/Simbol tour, rental car split two ways | 1,004-1,180 |
That’s roughly 3,223-3,855 MDL per person across four days. Day 4 adds a second winery experience with a restaurant and spa on site rather than another cellar.
Is Castel Mimi worth a fourth day?
Yes, if you want a slower day with a tasting and a meal rather than more sightseeing. Its White Owl restaurant is open daily 10:00-22:00, and a Wine Spa package (indoor pool, jacuzzi and saunas, about 3 h) is 2,500 MDL on weekdays only.
Can you swap Castel Mimi for Mileștii Mici on a 3-day trip?
Yes, if you prefer a resort setting to a cellar tour. Swap Day 3 for Castel Mimi on the 3-day itinerary ; both lie outside the capital, so do not stack them on one day.
Moldova overall sits at a Level 2 “Exercise Increased Caution” advisory from the US State Department, tied to the war in neighbouring Ukraine, and drones have crossed Moldovan airspace this autumn, so check flight status and travel.state.gov close to your dates. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria, and southern Moldova-Ukraine border crossings can close without notice, though that does not affect this itinerary’s Chișinău-based route.
