Six days out of Perth: four day trips, then an overnight
Six days runs the full 4-day plan , Rottnest, Fremantle, Swan Valley, the Pinnacles, and uses the two extra days for the one trip that genuinely doesn’t fit into a day: Margaret River. At 3-plus hours each way, treating it as a rushed day tour wastes most of a day on driving; budgeting two days instead means an actual afternoon of wine and caves rather than a bus window. The 7-day plan adds one more day on top of this.

Day 1: Rottnest Island via Fremantle
Route through Fremantle: a $3.50 (about US$2.45) train, then the Rottnest Express same-day return ferry for $85.50 adult (about US$60), admission included, versus $129.50 (about US$91) sailing direct from Perth. Hire a bike on the car-free island and bring your own food. Quokkas are wild animals; Rottnest Island’s own rules make touching or feeding one for a photo illegal.
Day 2: Fremantle’s free Gatehouse and one paid tour
The direct train from Perth Station takes about 30 minutes for a $3.50 fare. The Fremantle Prison Gatehouse is free; the True Crime Tour ($24 adult, about US$17) is the paid option worth choosing over the standard Convict Prison Tour. Fremantle Markets and the Cappuccino Strip fill out the rest of the day.
Day 3: Swan Valley’s easy half-day
A 25-45 minute drive or tour from the CBD, with thin public transport, so book a half-day wine tasting tour (from roughly $74 adult, about US$52) rather than self-drive between cellar doors. WA’s oldest wine region , planted since 1829, spans 40-plus wineries plus breweries, distilleries, and a chocolate factory.
Day 4: the Pinnacles, the last true day trip
About 190km/2 hours north via Indian Ocean Drive to Nambung National Park ; full-day coach tours run $147-199 adult (about US$103-139), or self-drive if you’d rather skip the markup. This is the furthest trip that still fits comfortably in a single day.
Day 5: Margaret River, the drive down and the wine
Margaret River sits 270-280km/3h15min-plus south of Perth, too far for a comfortable there-and-back day; budget the whole of Day 5 for the drive down and settle in for one night. WA’s premier wine region has 100-plus cellar doors, led by Vasse Felix (planted 1967), and an afternoon of tastings after a mid-morning arrival is realistic once you accept the drive isn’t a day-trip leg. A rental car for two days plus one night’s accommodation usually undercuts a packaged multi-day coach tour for two or more travelers; solo travelers often come out ahead booking the tour instead.
Day 6: caves and coastline, then back to Perth
Spend the morning at the Leeuwin-Naturaliste cave system, several hundred caves with six open to the public, including Mammoth Cave and its 35,000-year-old fossils, then swing by the surf coast (75-plus breaks along 130km, including the well-known Main Break) before the 3-plus hour drive back to Perth in the afternoon. Don’t schedule anything in Perth itself for Day 6 evening; the drive alone accounts for most of the day.
Why does Margaret River need two full days instead of one?
Because the drive alone is 6-plus hours round trip, more than a Pinnacles day tour and with nothing left over for wine, caves, or the coast if squeezed into a single day. Tour operators do sell one-day Margaret River products, but they leave only a couple of hours on the ground after the drive.
Is a rental car worth it just for the Margaret River leg?
Often yes, if traveling as a pair or more: a two-day rental plus one night’s accommodation typically costs less than a packaged overnight tour, and it lets you set your own cellar-door and cave schedule rather than following a bus timetable.
Treat Days 5 and 6 as one committed overnight, not a rushed add-on; that’s the difference between an actual Margaret River trip and a long drive with a lunch stop.
