Stockholm + Sweden in 6 Days on a Budget
Six days is enough to stop day-tripping the archipelago and actually stay a night in it, the difference between visiting the islands and just passing through them. Everything through day five here matches the shorter versions of this itinerary; day six is what a sixth day is actually for.
Book these before you go:
- Where to stay overnight in the archipelago : Sandhamn and Grinda both sell out in peak summer
- Drottningholm Palace tickets : skip the ticket line at the gate
| Day | Focus | Cost level | Book ahead |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The city, briefly | See the city itinerary | Royal Palace, if you want the interior |
| 2 | Vaxholm | Medium, ferry plus lunch | Waxholmsbolaget ferry, if going in peak summer |
| 3 | Drottningholm | Medium, ~150 SEK entry plus transit | Boat cruise, if it’s running that season |
| 4 | Uppsala and Sigtuna | Medium, train tickets on top | None required |
| 5 | Birka | Medium to higher, ferry plus museum | Birka ferry slot, tightens in summer |
| 6 | Overnight in the outer archipelago | Higher, boat plus a room | Sandhamn or Grinda room, well ahead in summer |
How much does a 6-day Stockholm and Sweden trip cost?
The city day and the Vaxholm/Drottningholm/Uppsala/Birka day trips run the same costs as the shorter versions of this itinerary. The overnight archipelago stop is the one real splurge day, a boat fare plus a room in Sandhamn or Grinda, both of which tighten up and get pricier the closer you book to peak summer.
Getting in and around
Flygbussarna’s coach from Arlanda costs roughly 129 SEK for 40-45 minutes, a third of the Arlanda Express’s price for maybe 20 extra minutes. SL runs one flat fare across the whole region now, 43 SEK a ride with 75-minute transfers, capped around 180 SEK a day on a contactless tap.
A few things about Sweden itself
Sweden runs on the krona, not the euro, and is close to fully cashless, so a foreign contactless card matters more here than actual cash. Skip Swish, the local payment app; it needs a Swedish bank ID, so it’s not built for visitors. And allemansratten, the right of public access, is why the overnight stop below is legal to walk and camp around in the first place, not a special permit you need to arrange.
Day 1: the city, briefly
Spend today in Gamla Stan and at the Royal Palace, both covered properly by the 6-day Stockholm itinerary and the Stockholm guide .
Day 2: Vaxholm
Ferry out to Vaxholm on the Waxholmsbolaget line, about an hour each way, for a fortress town and a harbor lunch. A full day once the ferry time is counted.
Day 3: Drottningholm
The King’s actual residence, a UNESCO site with Baroque gardens and a working 18th-century court theater, around 150 SEK entry. Take the seasonal boat if it’s running, or the metro-plus-bus route otherwise. Half a day.
Day 4: Uppsala and Sigtuna
A 40-minute direct train to Uppsala for Scandinavia’s largest cathedral and Sweden’s oldest university, with Sigtuna, the country’s oldest town, added on the way back if you start early.
Day 5: Birka
A full day on the water to Birka’s Viking-age ruins, a genuine UNESCO site and one of the more underrated day trips out of Stockholm.
Day 6: overnight in the outer archipelago
Take the Waxholmsbolaget or Stromma boat out to Sandhamn or Grinda, both further out than Vaxholm and worth the extra hour precisely because they’re quieter; book a room ahead in summer since options are limited. Sandhamn suits anyone who wants a working harbor and a sailing-town feel; Grinda and Uto lean quieter and greener, better for a slow walk than an evening out. An overnight beats a day trip here, full stop, the whole appeal of the archipelago is watching a harbor empty out after the last day-boat leaves, and no day trip lets you see that. Either way, this is the one night of the trip where allemansratten actually matters if you’d rather pitch a tent than book a room; camping on uncultivated land is allowed for a night or two, just stay off cultivated fields and at least 70 meters from any house.
Sail back into the city the next morning; boats back to Slussen usually run early enough to connect with an afternoon flight out of Arlanda. If your own flight is a morning one, swap this overnight earlier in the trip and spend your actual last day back in the city instead.
Money and timing notes
Tipping is round-up-only. Systembolaget is the only legal source for wine, spirits, or strong beer to take home, closed Sundays with short weekday hours, so don’t leave that errand for your last day. If your dates land anywhere near Midsummer, June 19-20 in 2026, expect the opposite of a busy holiday: most Stockholmers leave for the countryside that weekend and plenty of city businesses close early or entirely, so don’t build a normal sightseeing day around it.
Book the outer-island ferry and your room well ahead for summer dates; Sandhamn and Grinda both sell out faster than Vaxholm does.
