Accra Travel Tips: Etiquette and Culture
Greetings:
- “Akwaaba!” (Welcome!) is the standard greeting. Respond with “Medaase” (thank you).
- Ghanaians are generally friendly and warm. Expect to shake hands when meeting someone for the first time.
- Respect elders: Show deference to older people. Offer them your seat on public transport and address them respectfully (“Nana” for men, “Maame” for women).
Dress:
- Modest attire: While Accra is a modern city, dressing modestly is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites or traditional communities. Avoid revealing clothing.
- Lightweight fabrics: Pack breathable clothes suitable for the hot and humid climate.
- Comfortable shoes: You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so comfortable footwear is essential.
Dining:
- Eating with your right hand: Traditionally, Ghanaians eat with their right hand only. Using your left hand is considered impolite.
- Sharing food: It’s common to share dishes among friends and family. Don’t be shy to ask for more!
- “Chop money”: In some restaurants and bars, it’s customary to leave a small tip (around 10% of the bill) called “chop money.”
Transportation:
- Trotros: These are shared minibuses that are the most common mode of transport. Negotiate the fare before boarding.
- Taxi: Taxis are readily available, but agree on a price beforehand. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt also operate in Accra.
- Traffic: Be prepared for heavy traffic, especially during rush hour.
General Etiquette:
- Bargaining: Haggling is common practice at markets and with street vendors.
- Personal space: Ghanaians tend to stand closer together when conversing compared to Western cultures.
- Photography: Always ask permission before taking photographs of people, especially in rural areas or traditional settings.
- Language: While English is the official language, learning a few basic phrases in Twi (the most widely spoken local language) will be greatly appreciated.
Safety:
- Petty theft: Be aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure. Avoid flashing expensive items.
- Scams: Be wary of individuals who approach you offering unsolicited services or deals.
- Water: Drink bottled water to avoid stomach upset.
Enjoy your time in Accra! It’s a vibrant city with friendly people, delicious food, and rich cultural experiences.
