Alicante Bus Tours: Turibus Routes and Fares
An open-top double-decker idles by Plaza Puerta del Mar every hour on the hour, and it is the fastest way to see how the whole city fits together before you start walking it.
The Turibús loop
Alicante’s hop-on hop-off service, branded Turibús, is run by the municipal transit operator Vectalia in partnership with Alicante City & Beach. It follows a fixed one-hour circuit past 12 stops, including the port at Puerta del Mar, the Postiguet elevator tunnel, MARQ, the Cigarreras cultural center, Mercado Central, Plaza de los Luceros, the Renfe station, the Maisonnave shopping boulevard, Teatro Principal, Rambla Méndez Núñez, the Explanada de España, and the Ocean Race museum. Commentary plays through onboard headsets in six languages. A ticket bought on board or at the kiosk covers 24 hours of unlimited boarding: €10 for adults, €7 for seniors, €5 for children aged 4 to 12.
Two details catch people out. First, the season: Turibús runs from March 19 through December 8 and shuts down completely over winter, so a January visit will not find it running at all. Second, the midday gap: departures start at 10:00, run through roughly 13:00, then pause for a few hours before resuming in the afternoon (16:00 to 18:00 in winter months, 16:00 to 19:00 in summer). The bus also stops at the foot of Mount Benacantil on Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora, not at the castle itself; you still take the tunnel elevator or walk up from there.
For day trips further out, Alicante’s central bus station at Muelle de Poniente is the departure point for regional coaches into the mountains. A Guadalest and Algar Waterfalls day tour covers the fortress village perched on its limestone pinnacle and a stop to swim in the waterfall pools, all by coach with a driver who knows the mountain roads. Closer in, a half-day trip to the Canelobre Caves near Busot reaches a 70-metre karst cavern that public transport does not serve directly.
The cheap alternative
If your interest is the coastline rather than a guided loop, the municipal Line 22 bus runs from Plaza Puerta del Mar out to Cabo de las Huertas and Playa de San Juan for a flat €1.45, the same fare as a single TRAM zone. It is not narrated and it is not a tourist product, but it covers similar ground to the Turibús seafront stretch at a fraction of the price if you already know what you want to see. Current routes and live timetables for both the C6 airport bus and city lines sit on Vectalia’s own site , and the municipal Alicante Turismo portal keeps the Turibús calendar current if the season dates shift.
The verdict: Turibús earns its fare for a first morning in the city, orienting you before you commit to walking Barrio de Santa Cruz on foot. It is not worth booking twice, and it is not a substitute for the regional coach trips if mountains and caves are the goal. Check the season dates before you plan a visit around it, since a bus that photographs well in July simply is not running in January.
