Amsterdam Canal Cruises by Price Tier
The canals were never built for a cruise ship, and the city has started acting on that: ocean liner calls are capped at 100 a year from 2026, with river-cruise calls being cut year over year toward a 2028 ceiling. None of that touches the small boats that actually work the canal ring, but “a canal cruise” still spans close to a 40x price range depending on which tier you book.
The shared daytime cruise: EUR 12-25 a head
Large operators including Blue Boat, Stromma and Lovers Canal Cruises run 75-90 minute city-highlight routes on glass-roofed boats seating 80-200 passengers, for roughly EUR 12-25pp; Blue Boat’s own City Canal Cruise lists around EUR 14. Boutique small-group boats: EUR 28-38 a head
A step up in size and price, boutique operators run shared cruises on smaller boats for 60-90 minutes at EUR 28-38pp. Fewer passengers means an actual view instead of a crowded deck, which is the entire trade-off against the cheaper mass-market option above.
Private charter: EUR 280-380 for the boat, not per person
A private charter for six to ten people runs roughly EUR 280-380 for 90 minutes, scaling past EUR 500 for a larger or more luxurious boat. Split across a full group this can land close to the boutique per-head price, so it is worth doing that math before assuming a private boat is automatically the expensive option. Why the cruise-ship cap does not touch any of this
The 100-ship annual cap and the river-cruise phase-down apply to the large ocean and river vessels that used to dock in the city center, some of which are now diverting to Zaandam roughly 20 minutes away, as reported by Maritime Executive . It is a genuinely different fleet from the glass-roofed sightseeing boats above, and none of the three tiers here are affected by it. Work out the per-person cost of a private charter against your actual group size before ruling it out on price alone; a full boat of eight or nine often beats the boutique per-head rate.
