Antwerp makes a strong base for Belgian day trips because everything worth reaching sits on one direct rail line, and none of it needs a scarce timed ticket booked from Antwerp. Half-day trips
Mechelen (17-20 min, €6-9)
The shortest, cheapest hop from Antwerp, with trains every 8-15 minutes. St Rumbold’s Cathedral, its carillon, and a compact Gothic old town are genuinely covered in a morning, so pair Mechelen with an afternoon back in Antwerp rather than blocking out a whole day.
Brussels (45-48 min, €9-11)
Direct trains run about every 15 minutes. The Grand-Place, plus one paid sight like the Atomium or the Magritte Museum, fills a half-day there and back. Antwerp stands on its own merits, so treat Brussels as an add-on rather than a gateway you have to pass through.
Full-day trips
Ghent (46 min-1h, €9-14)
The middle case: reachable in under an hour but rich enough to fill a full day. Graslei, Gravensteen castle, and the Van Eyck altarpiece in St Bavo’s Cathedral reward a slow visit, with fewer coach tours than Bruges.
Bruges (1h25-1h35, €14-19)
The longest and priciest Belgian leg, over 90 minutes each way. The Markt, the canal loop, and the 366-step Belfry climb are worth it, but go early or late; coach and cruise groups peak at midday. This is a full day, start to finish.
Ostend and the coast (1h34-1h45, €18-27)
A beach-and-promenade day rather than a heritage one, with the Kusttram running the length of the coast to resort towns like De Haan. It only pencils out roughly May through September, so skip it for a shorter trip in poor weather.
Lille in France (1h30-2h, €20+) is a genuine international border crossing, so bring a passport or EU ID card and treat it as separate from the all-Belgium trips above.
