Travel advisory: Official advice is firm: the US government says not to travel to Myanmar, and the UK says not to travel to Sagaing or north of Mandalay city and to avoid all but essential travel to Mandalay itself. Violence, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns are continuing, and the March 2025 earthquake damaged many sites around the city. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Mandalay Region Attractions
Mandalay Region holds several religious and historic sites. No attraction can currently be confirmed open, and the condition and access of each place below are unconfirmed since the March 2025 earthquake.
Cultural sites
- Mandalay Hill is a pilgrimage hill with views over the city. Sutaungpyei Pagoda stands at the summit.
- Kuthodaw Pagoda is known for 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist scriptures. Surveyors reported serious structural damage.
- Shwenandaw Monastery is known for its teak carvings and was once part of the royal palace.
Historic sites
- Inwa (Ava) was a capital of earlier kingdoms. About three quarters of its historic structures were damaged, and the Maha Aungmye Bonzan (Me Nu) is nearly destroyed.
- Amarapura is known for U Bein Bridge, a long teak footbridge across Taungthaman Lake.
Farther afield
- Pyin Oo Lwin is a hill station known for colonial architecture and botanical gardens. It lies in an area where the UK advises against all travel, and rocket attacks have hit the town.
- Mogok is known for ruby mining. It lies in a conflict-affected area and is not a destination under current advice.
Practical notes
- Dress modestly at temples, covering shoulders and knees.
- The hot, humid season runs from March to May.
