Auckland Sightseeing on a Real Budget
Most of Auckland’s best views cost nothing at all. The one paid landmark worth budgeting for is the Sky Tower, and even that has a genuine range rather than one fixed price.
Free: the volcanic cones
Mount Eden (Maungawhau) is Auckland’s highest natural point at 196 meters, vehicle-free at the summit since January 2016, with a boardwalk circling the crater rim (walking into the crater bowl itself is off-limits out of respect for mana whenua). One Tree Hill, a short trip away inside Cornwall Park, adds grazing sheep and a summit track with views across Rangitoto and the Waitākere Ranges. Both are free and pair well on the same day.
Free: the waterfront
Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter cost nothing to walk, with the marina and Silo Park’s old industrial buildings turned into public space. The Harbour Bridge itself is also free to view from Westhaven or Wynyard; walking or climbing it costs money and belongs in a different guide.
Cheap: the Devonport ferry
A 12-minute AT-network ferry, roughly NZD 8-9, gets you to Devonport, and this fare is covered by the AT HOP weekly cap, unlike the separate Waiheke and Rangitoto routes. Devonport’s Victorian streets and the twin volcanic cones of Mount Victoria and North Head make it the best value harbour crossing in the city.
Cheap: Karanga Plaza’s tidal pool
Tucked at the edge of Wynyard Quarter, this free tidal saltwater pool fills and drains with the tide and gets overlooked by most visitors chasing the bigger-name waterfront spots. It’s a genuinely low-cost stop to add to a Viaduct Harbour walk without paying for anything.
The one paid landmark: Sky Tower
At 328 meters the Sky Tower is New Zealand’s tallest structure by a wide margin, though it lost the “tallest in the Southern Hemisphere” title to Jakarta’s Autograph Tower in 2022, so don’t take an older claim at face value. General admission sits somewhere between NZD 35 and 47 depending on the source, so check skycityauckland.co.nz directly rather than budgeting a single number.
