Beyond a Weekend: Northern Laos From Luang Prabang

The 2-day Mekong slow boat from Huay Xai
This traditional wooden slow boat (Ruea Cha) runs from the Thai border at Huay Xai down to Luang Prabang, with an overnight stop in the riverside trading village of Pakbeng. It is a slow, scenic alternative to flying, and a much safer one than the motorized speedboats that also cover this stretch, which have a poor record around submerged logs. 3 days around Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi
Three hours north by minivan, Nong Khiaw sits inside a ring of vertical limestone karst. From there, hike to the Pha Daeng Peak viewpoint for cloud-inversion views, visit the Civil War-era cave shelters at Tham Pha Thok, and take a longtail boat to the roadless village of Muang Ngoi for a homestay. Stick to marked trails and go with a licensed local guide for anything off them; rural Luang Prabang province still carries unexploded ordnance away from established paths, even though the urban old town and the marked trails at Kuang Si and Pak Ou are fully cleared.
2-3 nights at Nam Et-Phou Louey
Laos’s flagship community-based ecotourism project, in eastern Luang Prabang province, takes visitors by longtail boat up the Nam Nern River into primary rainforest for eco-hut camping and nocturnal floating wildlife safaris, spotlighting sambar deer, civets, and slow lorises. November to April brings the driest, most reliable weather for river travel and trekking alike. Book accommodation ahead in Pakbeng and Nong Khiaw during peak season (November to March), since both are small villages with limited rooms, and carry cash: ATMs thin out fast once you leave Luang Prabang.
