Budapest Activities: What to Book
Budapest Activities: What to Book
Gellért Baths is a construction site until at least late 2028, so the real choice this year sits between Széchenyi and Rudas.
A Thermal Bath Soak, Named and Tiered
Széchenyi, the mustard-yellow Neo-Baroque complex in City Park, sells a locker ticket for roughly 13,200 HUF on weekdays and 14,800 HUF on weekends, with a cabin ticket running 14,200 to 15,800 HUF. Rudas, the smaller Ottoman-era octagonal pool on the Buda side, charges 12,000 to 15,000 HUF for a day ticket, or 15,000 HUF for its online-only night-bathing session with a rooftop pool over the Danube (add 2,500 HUF for a poolside cocktail). Rudas also keeps a few single-sex days on its weekly schedule. Bring a padlock for a locker, or pay the difference for a cabin. Rudas Baths’ own site and Széchenyi’s both list the current day’s hours and ticket tier.
A Danube Kayak or Paddleboard Session
From April through October, a self-rental kayak or SUP runs about 4,000 HUF for two hours or 6,500 HUF for a full day, launched from Római Part or Margaret Island. A guided paddle past Parliament and Buda Castle costs more, roughly 40 to 80 euros per person, with a guide handling the barge traffic for you. Book a Danube kayak or SUP session on GetYourGuide for current availability.
A Hands-On Cooking Class
Most visitors picture goulash as a thick stew, but that dish is properly pörkölt; genuine gulyás, or gulyásleves, is a brothy soup, and a good class will tell you which one you’re actually making before you sit down to eat it. Book a Hungarian cooking class on GetYourGuide to see current dates.
A Ruin-Bar Crawl, Checked Current
Szimpla Kert, the original ruin bar inside a crumbling former factory in the Jewish Quarter, remains the anchor stop and still the busiest by far. A few streets over, Instant and Fogasház now share a single building under the Fogasház name, with Robot and Lärm running as sub-venues inside the same walls, worth treating as one stop rather than several separate addresses.
Before You Book
None of the above needs more than a day or two of lead time, aside from a summer cooking class, which can fill up a week ahead. Pack a swimsuit and flip-flops for either bath, and check the weekday price before assuming the weekend rate applies. For the ticketed monuments this list leaves out, the sightseeing guide covers Parliament and the Castle District, and the attraction tours guide covers the guided version of a bath visit or a ruin-pub crawl.
