Cairo Travel Tips: Etiquette & Culture
Key Travel Points:
-
Visa: Most nationalities require a visa to enter Egypt. Check requirements well in advance and consider applying online for an e-visa.
-
Currency: The Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the currency. US dollars are widely accepted but you’ll often get a better rate exchanging cash. ATMs are readily available.
-
Language: Arabic is the official language. English is spoken in tourist areas, but learning basic Arabic phrases will be greatly appreciated.
-
Transportation:
- Taxis: Abundant and relatively cheap, negotiate the fare beforehand.
- Uber & Careem: Ride-hailing apps are popular and offer transparent pricing.
- Metro: An affordable and efficient way to get around central Cairo.
-
Bargaining: Expected in souks (markets) and with street vendors. Start low, be polite, and enjoy the back-and-forth.
Cultural Etiquette:
- Dress modestly: Cover shoulders and knees, especially when visiting religious sites. Loose-fitting clothing is preferable in hot weather.
- Right hand only: Use your right hand for eating, shaking hands, and passing objects. The left hand is considered unclean.
- Shoes off: Remove shoes before entering homes, mosques, and some shops.
- Respect Ramadan: During this holy month, refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours.
- Greetings: A handshake is common between men. Women may greet each other with a kiss on the cheek (if they are close).
- Hospitality: Egyptians are known for their warmth and hospitality. Accept offers of tea or coffee, it’s considered rude to refuse.
Additional Tips:
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially in the hot weather.
- Sunscreen & hat: Protect yourself from the strong Egyptian sun.
- Be patient: Things may move at a slower pace than you’re used to. Embrace the relaxed atmosphere.
- Learn some Arabic: Even basic phrases like “shukran” (thank you) and “ma’a as-salaama” (goodbye) will be appreciated.
Enjoy your trip to Cairo!
