Couples in This Corner of Poland Stay in Kraków

Oświęcim is the town next to Auschwitz-Birkenau, and that is why most people travel here: to visit the memorial, not for a romantic weekend. Couples touring this part of southern Poland base themselves in Kraków instead, about an hour north by car or train, and build their days from there.

Old Town & Wawel:

  • Rynek Główny: Europe’s largest surviving medieval square, ringed by the Cloth Hall’s stone arcades and St. Mary’s Basilica, whose trumpeter still plays the hejnał from the tower every hour, cutting off mid note in memory of a 13th century watchman.
  • Wawel Hill at dusk: The castle and cathedral close to visitors by early evening, but the hill and riverbank stay open. Walk up as the crowds thin and the floodlights come on.

Kazimierz:

  • Plac Nowy: The old Jewish quarter’s main square is a produce and flea market by day; by night the round building at its center sells zapiekanki, Polish open-face baguette pizza, until the early hours.
  • Bar-hopping on Szeroka and Józefa streets: Kazimierz’s converted courtyards hold some of the city’s best bars, including Alchemia, Singer, and Eszeweria, each with its own low-lit, mismatched-furniture character.

Riverside:

  • Bulwary Wiślane: The Vistula boulevards below Wawel are where locals walk, cycle, and picnic. The fire-breathing Wawel Dragon statue at the foot of Dragon’s Den draws a crowd every few minutes.
  • Evening river cruise: Short boat trips run from the boulevards past the castle, an easy way to see the skyline lit up after dark.

Day trip:

  • Wieliczka Salt Mine: About twenty minutes outside the city, this centuries-old mine holds chapels, chandeliers, and sculptures carved entirely from rock salt more than 100 meters underground.

Food:

  • Hala Targowa: A covered market near Kazimierz good for fresh produce, flowers, and a quick bite between sightseeing.
  • Milk bars: These old-style cafeterias, called bary mleczne, serve cheap Polish staples like pierogi and żurek, a budget-friendly way to eat well.
  • St. Mary’s Basilica altarpiece: Inside the basilica on the main square, a wooden Gothic altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss over more than a decade in the 15th century is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Practical notes:

  • Kraków’s Old Town and Kazimierz are both walkable, and a few days here easily fills a couple’s itinerary without needing to leave the city.
  • Trains between Kraków and Oświęcim run regularly and take about ninety minutes. Visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau requires advance booking and stands on its own as a day, not paired with anything else.
