Dhaka Travel Tips: Navigating Culture & Customs
Respectful Greetings:
- Salam: The most common greeting is “Assalamu alaikum” (Peace be upon you), which should be responded to with “Wa alaikum assalam” (And peace be upon you).
- Namaskar: A Hindu greeting meaning “I bow to you,” used by people of all faiths.
Dress Code:
- Modesty is key: Dhaka is a conservative city. Avoid revealing clothing like shorts, sleeveless tops, or short skirts. Opt for loose-fitting clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.
- Headscarf: While not mandatory for women tourists, wearing a headscarf (or “orna”) when visiting mosques or religious sites shows respect.
Dining Etiquette:
- Eating with hands: Traditionally, Bangladeshis eat with their right hand. The left hand is considered unclean.
- Sharing food: Meals are often communal and shared amongst family and friends.
Social Interactions:
- Personal space: Bangladeshi people tend to stand closer when conversing than Westerners may be accustomed to.
- Asking permission: Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially religious figures or women.
- Bargaining: Bargaining is expected in markets and with rickshaw drivers. Be polite but firm.
Transportation:
- Rickshaws: A quintessential Dhaka experience! Negotiate the fare before getting on.
- Buses: Crowded but cheap. Learn basic Bengali phrases like “Dhaka” (Dhaka) and “Stop” (Rokto).
- Ride-sharing apps: Uber and Pathao are popular options for safer and more comfortable rides.
Safety & Security:
- Petty theft: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Don’t carry large amounts of cash and keep valuables secure.
- Traffic: Dhaka traffic is notorious! Exercise caution while crossing the street.
Other Tips:
- Learn basic Bengali phrases: “Shukriya” (Thank you), “Ami Bangla janina” (I don’t speak Bengali)
- Carry hand sanitizer: Hygiene standards may vary.
- Drink bottled water: Avoid tap water.
- Be patient and open-minded: Embrace the chaos and cultural differences.
