Dublin Multi Day Trips: Nights Worth Paying For

A €65 coach seat to the Cliffs of Moher and a €60 bed in Galway cost about the same, and only one of them gets you more than ninety minutes at the cliffs. That arithmetic is the whole argument for adding nights to a Dublin trip rather than adding coach days to it.
How long Dublin itself holds
- Two days covers the city core honestly: Trinity and the Book of Kells, the Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham, the free national collections, Temple Bar and the Georgian squares.
- Three days is the first-timer sweet spot, adding Howth or Glendalough.
- Four to five days gets you Newgrange and a second coastal day.
- Six or more only works as Dublin plus somewhere else. Padding a sixth day inside the canals means a fourth Temple Bar evening, and Temple Bar is where a pint costs €7.00 to €9.00 instead of the €5.00 to €6.20 it costs a ten minute walk away.
Book in this order, and no other
- Kilmainham Gaol, the moment your dates are fixed, at the 28 day midnight release. €8, guided-only, online-only, gone in minutes.
- The Book of Kells, one to two weeks ahead in summer. Four tiers from €19 to €65.
- The Guinness Storehouse, last. It is always available; the only question is whether you pay the €24 floor or the €30 to €36 peak rate.
One planning fact that catches people out: the Dublin Castle campus, including the Chester Beatty, is closed to the public until January 2027, so it cannot go in any 2026 itinerary. Notice at heritageireland.ie .
Two nights in Galway, and the cliffs fixed
Irish Rail runs direct from Heuston to Galway in 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 30, nine or ten trains a day. Timetables at irishrail.ie .
Take that as an overnight and the Cliffs of Moher problem solves itself. The day-trip version from Dublin is a 12 to 13 hour coach at roughly €65 to €78, of which about six hours is sitting down and 90 minutes to two hours is at the cliffs. From Galway or Doolin you can be at the cliffs in the morning light with the Burren and Connemara in reach, and the visitor experience costs about €8 booked online against about €15 at the gate, under 12s free, parking included.
This is the strongest multi-day case Dublin has, and it is also the cheapest per hour of actual landscape.
Two nights in Belfast, and the currency changes
Roughly two to three hours each way, and the full-day coach version runs about 12 hours via the Antrim Coast Road, Dunluce Castle and the Dark Hedges.
This crosses the border into Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and the currency switches from euro to pounds sterling. Mobile roaming rules change at the same line. Carry a card and some sterling; euro will not be much use in a Portrush chip shop. Two nights in the Wicklow Mountains
Glendalough walked properly rather than bussed to, the Sally Gap drive with the R759 viewpoints over Lough Tay (the lake itself is on the private Luggala estate with no public access to the water or the shore), and Powerscourt as two separate stops: the house and gardens at €14 and the waterfall at €7, which are 6 km apart with no combined ticket and no bus between them. Two nights in the Boyne Valley
For anyone serious about prehistory: Brú na Bóinne done properly rather than as the tail end of an eight hour coach loop, with the Hill of Tara, which is free and OPW-run, and Monasterboice with its high crosses. Newgrange access is visitor centre and shuttle only, at €18 adult, €16 senior, €12 student and child 12 to 17, booked 30 days ahead from 1 April to 1 November and 7 days ahead in winter. Knowth closes from early November to the end of February.

One more thing worth catching on a Saturday before you leave: the Temple Bar Food Market runs at Meeting House Square, roughly 09:30 to 15:30, and is the cheapest good lunch in the quarter.
Three days in Dublin and two in Galway is the trip most people should be taking, and it costs less than five days in Dublin with two coach days bolted on. Work out what fits in the day trips and which tickets you actually need before you book a single bed.
