Festivals and Events in Mecca

Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, is a hub of religious activity throughout the year. While it doesn’t host traditional “festivals” with music and entertainment like other cities, its calendar is filled with significant events tied to Islamic traditions.

1. Hajj: This annual pilgrimage is the most important event in Mecca, drawing millions of Muslims from around the world. It takes place during the month of Dhu al-Hijjah according to the lunar calendar (typically August/September).

• Key Activities: Performing rituals like circling the Kaaba, walking between Safa and Marwa hills, standing at Arafat, and stoning the Jamarat pillars.

2. Umrah: This “lesser pilgrimage” can be undertaken anytime throughout the year. Muslims perform similar rituals to Hajj but on a smaller scale.

• Key Activities: Tawaf (circling the Kaaba), Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwa hills)
