Geneva for Families: Beach, Museums, CERN
Geneva doesn’t have a zoo or an aquarium, but it does have two free beaches, a free animal park, and a science museum that costs nothing to walk into.
Free swimming, two ways
Plage des Eaux-Vives, a Left Bank sand-and-gravel beach that opened in 2019, is free, with showers and grass for a picnic and a clear view across to the Jet d’Eau. Genève-Plage at Port-Noir charges CHF 7 for adults and CHF 3.50 for children (6-15) for a 50-meter pool, a diving tower, slides and paddleboard rental. Bains des Pâquis on the Right Bank is CHF 2 for adults, CHF 1 for children 6-15, free under 6.
The real animal park
Parc animalier du Bois de la Bâtie , run by the City of Geneva, is free every day and home to about 300 animals of indigenous and threatened species: goats, sheep, fallow deer, wild boar, ponies, peacocks, marmots. There’s no big-cat enclosure and no aquarium anywhere in the city; the nearest zoo with large animals is Zoo de Servion, 65km away near Lausanne.
CERN Science Gateway
Free entry, no ticket needed at the door once you’ve booked a timed slot online, worth doing up to a month ahead in busy periods. Kids drawn to the guided lab tour specifically should know those slots release on-site two hours before each tour, first-come first-served, so build in a backup activity nearby.
Parks built for kids
Jardin Anglais, right by the Jet d’Eau, has a playground with swings and climbing frames alongside the 1955 Flower Clock. Parc des Bastions adds a giant outdoor chessboard anyone can play plus wide lawns for a picnic.
Climbing St. Pierre’s towers
The cathedral nave is free; the 157-step climb up the north and south towers is CHF 7 for adults and CHF 4 for youth aged 7-16, a manageable target for kids who like a goal to walk toward.
Getting around with a family
Staying overnight means the Geneva Transport Card covers trams, buses and the yellow mouette shuttle boats for every family member, so a day plan can mix the beach, the animal park and a museum without buying tickets between stops. Day-trippers not staying over still need ordinary Unireso tickets bought at the machines.
