Group Activities Mandalay
Travel advisory: Both the US and UK governments warn against visiting. The US advises against all travel to Myanmar; the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of the city. Fighting, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns continue, and the March 2025 earthquake damaged many sites. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Group Travel in Mandalay
No organised group activities in Mandalay can be verified, and under current official advice group travel to the city is not advisable.
What groups once visited
- Mahamuni Pagoda, known for its revered Buddha image. A building in the compound collapsed in the March 2025 earthquake, and its opening status is unconfirmed. Women and girls may not approach the image.
- Mandalay Hill, a pilgrimage hill with views over the city. Its access is unconfirmed since the earthquake.
- Craft workshops in Amarapura and the city, whose current status is unconfirmed.
Practical notes
- Dress modestly at temples and pagodas and remove shoes before entering sacred spaces.
- Bargaining is common in markets.
