Krakow Activities: Free Days and Real Prices

Kraków gives away its best scheduled event: a live trumpet call from St Mary’s taller tower, every hour, through the night as well, breaking off mid-note. Almost everything else carries a price, and in this city the price moves by day of the week rather than by season. Learn the free-day map and three days here cost about what two would further west.
Free every hour, and nobody sells a ticket for it
The hejnał is played live from the tower on the hour, and the noon call has gone out live on Polish national radio since 1927, which means virtually every Pole has heard this exact sound at midday their whole life. Stand anywhere on Rynek Główny. The Planty ring, the Cloth Hall’s ground-floor arcade, Wawel Hill’s courtyard and the bronze Wawel Dragon on the river bank cost nothing either.
Paid activities, ranked by what you get for the money
The salt mine is the one worth the outlay. Everything underground at Wieliczka is guided, with no independent walking of either route, and the Tourist Route covers about 3.5 km on foot down to roughly 135 m, around 800 steps, at a steady 17 to 18°C. The price is a ladder rather than a number: route, guide language, concession and season all move it, the mine’s own line is “from 93 zł”, and a Polish-language departure costs less than an English one. Below that, in ascending order of cost: Podziemna Nowa Huta, a genuine Cold War shelter under a school at os. Szkolne 37, is 18 PLN or 14 reduced and free on Tuesdays, reached by tram 4, 10 or 22 in about half an hour on a standard single ticket. The Kraków Pinball Museum at Stradomska 15 charges roughly 50 PLN for an hour or 70 for the day, with 70-plus machines on free play and no coins needed. Crazy Guides runs real Trabants and Ladas through Nowa Huta, with a 3.5 hour Deluxe option at 179 PLN that adds the old steelworks and a pierogi lunch. A TasteVodka evening is six or seven Polish vodkas with snacks across cellar bars over about 3.5 hours, sold as a tasting rather than a crawl, which is the honest description of it.
Free museum days run on two separate calendars
Two different institutions offer free entry in Kraków and they do not share a day. The National Museum in Kraków is free every Tuesday at all its branches. The Museum of Kraków gives each branch its own day instead. Check the branch, not the city.

Three catches decide whether the free day works for you. It covers permanent exhibitions only. Free days run shorter hours. And at the two busiest branches, Schindler’s Factory and the Rynek Underground, nothing can be booked online on the free day: tickets go at the box office, five a person, while they last. One better trick if you are under 27: the National Museum’s youth ticket for ages 7 to 26 is 1 PLN on permanent exhibitions, any day of the week. That beats queueing on a Tuesday.
What can you eat in Krakow for under 35 zloty?
A full meal at a milk bar, and not as a novelty act. The bar mleczny format was invented here in 1948, the first one opening on the Main Market Square, and the survivors are still partly subsidised. Soup plus a main runs 20 to 35 PLN. Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą is the only true milk bar inside the Old Town, so it is busier and dearer and has an English menu; Bar Mleczny Targowy sits about ten minutes out, costs less and has no English menu at all.
Pay in złoty. Places near the square advertising that they accept euros set their own rate, typically 10 to 13 percent worse than the market one, and give your change back in złoty anyway.
Does the Krakow Card save money?
Only for a particular kind of trip. It bundles unlimited city transport, airport buses included, with free entry to a changing list of more than twenty museums. The exclusions are the problem: Wawel Castle interiors, Wieliczka, Auschwitz-Birkenau and St Mary’s are all outside it, and those are the four most people want. The museum list changes, so check what is on it today before buying rather than assuming a particular branch is covered.
Getting around costs 4 to 9 zloty a journey
MPK fares were restructured on 2 March 2026 and anything older is stale. Time tickets run 15 minutes 4 PLN, 30 minutes 6, 60 minutes 8 and 90 minutes 9, with reduced rates at roughly half. A 24-hour Zone I ticket is 20 PLN, 48 hours 40 and 72 hours 55. Activate the ticket the moment you board, because inspectors do check and an unactivated ticket counts as no ticket. The airport train, SKA1, is 20 PLN and about 17 to 20 minutes to Kraków Główny, and the same line continues to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, which makes it the cheapest way to do the salt mine independently.
Auschwitz-Birkenau, and how entry works
Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940 to 1945) stands about 65 to 70 km west of Kraków, and going there takes the whole day. Entry is booked online only, at visit.auschwitz.org . On-site sales ended on 1 March 2026 and nothing is sold at the gate.
Admission to the grounds is free. What is paid for is a guide-educator: the 3.5 hour tour for individual visitors is 150 PLN, or 140 reduced, and Polish-language departures run 10 to 20 PLN below foreign-language ones. Entering without a guide is possible only late in the day, on a cutoff that moves each month, from 13:00 in December through to 17:00 between April and September, and a free self-guided pass must be reserved no later than seven days ahead for a maximum of ten people. The Memorial revised its visitor regulations on 1 July 2026, so read the current rules on its own site before you travel.
Where to base yourself for a cheap week
Kleparz, just north of the Planty beside the main station, is a working market district ten to fifteen minutes’ walk from the square without Old Town pricing. Podgórze across the river is the other value pick, quieter and residential. Compare Kraków rates on Booking.com across both before defaulting to a room on the square.
If you have one weekday morning for a museum, make it a Tuesday and be at the Rynek Underground box office when it opens at 10:00. It is the Kraków sight most likely to sell out on the day, its free Tuesday closes at 15:00 rather than 19:00, and there is no online queue to join, only a physical one.
