La Paz Nature Spots, Free to Cheap
La Paz’s natural surroundings are dramatic and, almost without exception, cheap to see: the city itself sits in a canyon at around 3,640m, ringed by the Andes, and most of the best nature nearby costs a small entry fee or a cheap bus ticket rather than a paid tour. The one cost that matters more than any ticket is altitude, since everything below sits at 3,600m or higher.
Inside the city, free
The bowl-shaped geography of La Paz is itself worth seeing for free from any of the city’s viewpoints, Mirador Killi Killi chief among them. Riding the Mi Teleferico (around 3 BOB a ride) is arguably the best cheap way to take in the surrounding mountains, since several lines climb well above the city floor toward El Alto’s rim.
Valle de la Luna, a small fee
About 10km south of downtown, this eroded clay landscape of towering spires and shallow canyons is walkable in under an hour for a modest entry fee, and remains the single best value nature stop near the city.
Chacaltaya, a stark data point
Once a working glacier and ski area, Chacaltaya sits around 5,300m and has lost nearly all its ice within a generation, making it one of the most visible climate-change viewpoints in the Andes. It’s reachable on a guided day trip, but only worth attempting after you’ve properly acclimatized in La Paz first; the altitude here outranks anything else on this list.
Palca Canyon and Valle de las Animas
East and south of the city respectively, both offer red-rock canyon walking with far fewer visitors than Valle de la Luna, reachable by cheap local transport or a modest group tour.
Huayna Potosi, for a genuine splurge
At 6,088m, this is a multi-day guided climb rather than a walk, priced well above everything else here; it’s included for context, not as a budget recommendation, since it needs real mountaineering experience or a full guided package.
Planning around the altitude, not just the entry fee
Every spot on this list sits above 3,600m, and several go well beyond it, so treat acclimatization as the real budget line item: give yourself a rest day in La Paz before Valle de la Luna or the canyons, and several days before considering Chacaltaya. Weather shifts quickly at this elevation regardless of season, so carry layers, sun protection, and water even on a short walk. Our hiking areas guide goes deeper on trail-by-trail difficulty, and our day trips guide covers the logistics for getting to the farther options.
The cheapest way to enjoy La Paz’s nature is also the safest one: acclimatize first, start with the free viewpoints and Valle de la Luna, and only add altitude gradually from there.
