Ljubljana Parks and Green Spaces for Free
Green space you can reach on foot
Slovenia’s capital is genuinely green, and the best of its in-city nature is free and walkable from Preseren Square. This page stays inside Ljubljana itself; the Alps, the lakes, and the gorges are a drive away and belong to the day-trip guides. What the city gives you is a big central park, two wooded hills, a long recreation path, and a flat marsh, none of which needs a ticket.
Tivoli Park
Tivoli is the anchor: roughly 5 square kilometres of gardens bordering the centre, laid out in a French romantic style in 1813 with later touches by Joze Plecnik, including the Jakopic Promenade. You can wander for hours without repeating a path, past the pond, the tree-lined avenues, and the open lawns. It is free, open all day, and the easiest nature fix in the city, a few minutes on foot from the old town.
Roznik and Golovec hills
Tivoli climbs straight into Roznik Hill, a wooded rise threaded with trails that reach a small hilltop church and cafe, a free half-day walk with a view back over the rooftops. On the other side of the river, Golovec is the quieter forested hill, popular with local runners and mountain bikers, with paths linking toward the castle ridge. Both are proper woodland walks that start inside the city, no transport needed.
The PST path
The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (Pot spominov in tovaristva, or PST) is a roughly 33km green trail that loops the whole city along the line of the old wartime perimeter, now a tree-lined route for walking, running, and cycling. You do not have to do the full circuit; join it anywhere and follow a flat, shaded stretch for as long as you like, then peel back into a neighbourhood.
The Ljubljana Marsh
South of the centre, the Ljubljana Marsh (Ljubljansko barje) is a flat expanse of wet meadows and drainage channels crossed by quiet cycling and walking paths, rich in birdlife and almost empty of tourists. A BicikeLJ bike, free for the first hour of any rental, gets you out onto the flats and back, turning an afternoon in nature into a zero-euro transit day.
