Luxor After Dark for Couples: Two Evenings
Luxor does not have the long list of romantic spots that a coastal city has, and it is better to say so. What it does have is a handful of gentle evening pleasures, most of them on or beside the river, and two evenings is enough to enjoy them.
Evening one: the east bank
Begin on the corniche an hour before sunset. The paved promenade is free, and sailing boats cross the water against the far hills. Walk toward Luxor Temple, which stays open into the evening and is floodlit, and take a slow turn through the colonnades. Entry is EGP 500 for adults, paid by card at the gate. Afterwards, find dinner. A traditional meal for two at Sofra or at Al-Sahaby Lane runs about EGP 600 to 1,200 in total, with stuffed pigeon, lamb tagine and mezze on the menu.
Evening two: on the water
Book a felucca for the hour before sunset. A private sail costs about EGP 400 to 600 for the whole boat, and the boat takes up to four. Fix the price and the length of the trip before you board, and carry small EGP cash. If you want a drink afterwards, the Victorian terrace of the Winter Palace hotel, open since 1886, is the historic choice. Check current opening and booking directly with the hotel.
A morning flight
From September to May, a dawn balloon flight is the standout. It costs about USD 40 to 100 per person and includes a boat crossing and hotel pickup. Flights were suspended from June to August in 2026 because of the heat, so suspensions can happen, and weather cancellations are routine. Book only a licensed, certified operator. You can look at balloon flights on GetYourGuide .
The light show
The sound and light show at Karnak is a ticketed evening with narration and music beside the Sacred Lake. Reseller prices run about USD 42 to 77, and the English version starts around 7pm. Check the current programme on the Karnak sound and light site .
Practical points
The corniche and the river are comfortable from October to April. From June to August the heat reaches 42 to 46C, so choose the evenings, not the middle of the day. The FCDO travel advice for Egypt covers current safety information. For the full schedule, see the two-day Luxor plan and the Luxor activities page .
Tip: sit on the east bank for sunset, since the sun goes down behind the hills on the far shore.
