Madrid Romantic Getaways: Cheap Date Nights
The best romantic evening in Madrid costs nothing: a second-century-BCE Egyptian temple on a rise above the city, reflecting pools doubling it, and the Royal Palace skyline behind as the sun goes down. Add a 3 EUR rooftop, a 6 EUR rowing boat and churros at midnight and you have a full weekend for less than one dinner in Salamanca. The only real cost here is getting the timing wrong.

The Temple of Debod, and the mistake everyone makes
Debod is the definitive free romantic view in Madrid: a genuine Egyptian temple given to Spain in 1968 in thanks for Spanish help saving the Nubian monuments during the Aswan Dam project, standing on high ground in the Parque del Oeste with the Manzanares valley below and the palace to one side.
Two things decide whether the evening works. It closes on Mondays, including bank holiday Mondays, which is the classic way to waste a sunset. And capacity is limited, so take the free timed reservation through the city’s Debod page , especially at weekends. Arrive 45 to 60 minutes before sunset, which shifts from around 17:30 in December to past 21:00 in July.
Three viewpoints, three prices
Mirador Madrid on the eighth floor of the Palacio de Cibeles is the cheapest at 3 EUR, 2 EUR reduced, on timed 30-minute slots capped around 50 people, closed Mondays, with the Cibeles fountain directly beneath. CentroCentro on the floors below is free; details are at the CentroCentro site .
The Azotea del Círculo de Bellas Artes at Calle de Alcalá 42 charges 6 EUR, or 5 EUR with a youth card, and stays open to about 01:00 Sunday to Thursday and 02:00 on Friday and Saturday, looking 360 degrees over Gran Vía, Cibeles and Alcalá. Opening times are on the Círculo’s own site .
The 360º Rooftop Bar at the Riu Plaza España is the only genuinely 360-degree high terrace in the centre: 5 EUR Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 17:00, then 10 EUR from 17:00 to midnight and 10 EUR all day at weekends and on holidays, free to hotel guests. The weekday afternoon price is the one nobody uses.
Is anything genuinely free on a Madrid date?
Quite a lot of it. Debod at sunset, the Sabatini Gardens beside the Royal Palace, Retiro itself from about 06:00 to midnight with no gate and no ticket, the nave of the Almudena Cathedral on a voluntary 1 EUR donation, the brass-lettered streets of the Barrio de las Letras, and the Prado between 18:00 and 20:00 Monday to Saturday, which still needs a same-day reservation.
In Retiro the walk-around list is the Estanque Grande, the 1877 Fallen Angel statue, the Rosaleda, the Palacio de Velázquez and the Alfonso XII colonnade. The Palacio de Cristal is behind scaffolding while all 5,000 of its panes are replaced, wrapped for the whole of 2026 in a printed textile artwork and reopening around summer 2027.
Rowing at 6 EUR, and the quieter lake
Boats on the Estanque Grande in Retiro cost 6 EUR on weekdays and 8 EUR at weekends and holidays for the boat, not per person, in 45-minute turns for up to four, bookable through the Madrid Móvil app or madrid.es, with a reduction for over-65s on weekday mornings. The Lago de la Casa de Campo runs the same prices with a fraction of the queue. This is the cheapest genuinely memorable hour in Madrid.
Where to eat without spending a fortune
The menú del día is 10 to 16 EUR at most neighbourhood restaurants, Monday to Friday only, roughly 13:00 to 15:30, and 20 to 30 EUR in the tourist zones around Plaza Mayor and Sol. Eat lunch properly and keep the evening for tapas on Calle Ponzano in Chamberí, where the prices are what locals pay.
For a late ending, Chocolatería San Ginés at Pasadizo de San Ginés 5 has been serving churros since 1894 and stays open 24 hours from Thursday to Saturday, and roughly 08:00 to 23:45 the rest of the week. Churros at three in the morning after a night out is a genuine Madrid tradition rather than a tourist invention.
If you want one splurge, Sobrino de Botín near Plaza Mayor was founded in 1725, holds the Guinness record as the world’s oldest continuously operating restaurant and turned 300 in 2025. It is famous rather than quiet, so book early and go for the room.
Two evenings worth paying for
A Candlelight concert puts a string quartet in a candlelit hotel or church room rather than a concert hall, with tribute and film-score programmes; dates are listed per show at Candlelight Madrid . Out of town on a budget, the Jardín de la Isla and Jardín del Príncipe at Aranjuez are free, riverside and built for slow walking, about 45 to 50 minutes away on Cercanías C-3 or C-10.

Check the sunset time for your exact dates before booking dinner. Madrid eats at 21:00 anyway, and in June the sun is still up at 21:30, so the free part of the evening comes first without costing you the table.
