5 Memphis events worth timing a base trip around
Memphis’s festival calendar concentrates in May, with one out-of-town date worth pairing if the trip stretches into a Clarksdale day trip. Below are 5 confirmed 2026 dates, what each costs, and which ones push hotel prices up first.
| Event | 2026 dates | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| RiverBeat Music Festival | May 1-3, Tom Lee Park | Ticketed |
| World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest | May 13-16, Liberty Park | Free to walk, some ticketed tastings |
| Elvis Week | Aug 8-16, Graceland | Ticketed events, free to walk Graceland-area gatherings |
| Peabody Duck March | Daily, 11am and 5pm | Free |
| Juke Joint Festival (Clarksdale, MS) | April 11, day-trip distance | Ticketed |
What happened to the Beale Street Music Festival?
It’s been on hiatus since 2024, and the 2026 Memphis in May calendar doesn’t list a return date, so don’t build a trip around an assumed BSMF weekend. RiverBeat Music Festival, May 1-3 at Tom Lee Park, is the confirmed early-May music anchor in its place, book that instead if a big outdoor lineup is the point of the trip.
Does the barbecue contest need a ticket?
Only for the tastings. The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the world’s largest pork barbecue competition, runs May 13-16 at Liberty Park, and walking the grounds past the competing teams’ smokers is free; sampling the actual barbecue usually needs a ticket or a team’s hospitality tent invite.
Is Elvis Week worth timing a trip around?
If Graceland is the point of the visit, yes, but book the hotel first. Elvis Week runs August 8-16, 2026, built around the Candlelight Vigil on August 15, the eve of Elvis’s August 16, 1977 death anniversary, and it fills every Graceland-area room for the stretch. Check whether it affects any day-trip plans too, a Tunica or Clarksdale add-on the same week competes for the same rental cars.
Worth pairing with a Clarksdale day trip
Clarksdale’s own Juke Joint Festival runs April 11, 2026, roughly 75-95 minutes south on Highway 61. It’s not a Memphis event, but it’s close enough to fold into a base trip’s day-trip half, and it’s the one date on this list worth booking Delta lodging around well ahead, the Shack Up Inn’s rooms go first.
