Milan Sightseeing: Ticket Tiers and Free Sundays
There is no single price for the Duomo di Milano. There are five, plus a cheaper Wednesday rate that exists because the museum is shut that day. Understanding the ladder is worth more than any discount card in Milan, and the €5 ticket at the Castello Sforzesco, which covers every museum inside it, is the best value in the city by a wide margin. Duomo tickets without overpaying
Every Duomo ticket is valid for two days, the chosen day and the following one, with one entry per area. Under-6s are free and the reduced band covers ages 6 to 17, over-65s and students with a card. The Duomo Museum closes on Wednesdays, and the cathedral-plus-museum ticket falls to €8 / €4 on that day to reflect it.
If you can manage stairs, take them. The stairs route saves €2 at every tier and the lift only reaches the first terrace level at roughly 50 m, after which the upper walkways and the whole descent involve steps anyway. Strollers are not allowed on the terraces. Buy through the official Duomo site , never a lookalike guide domain.
Which free days are actually worth planning around?
Three civic sites run the same monthly pattern. The Castello Sforzesco museums and the Acquario Civico are free on the first Sunday of the month and on the first and third Tuesday after 14:00. The Museo del Novecento charges €5 rather than nothing in that Tuesday window. The Pinacoteca di Brera is free on the first Sunday with a reservation booked in advance. All four are crowded on those days, so treat them as free rather than quick.
Castello Sforzesco is the value ticket
€5 full, €3 reduced, and that one ticket admits you once to every museum inside the castle on the day you buy it: the Pinacoteca, the Museum of Ancient Art with Michelangelo’s Pietà Rondanini in its own former Spanish hospital room, the musical instruments, the furniture and wooden sculpture, and the Egyptian and archaeological collections. Nothing inside carries a separate charge.
Museums open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:30, last entry 16:30, closed Mondays. The courtyards are free, open daily and worth the walk on their own. Check the day on the Castello site before travelling.
Grande Brera, and the trap inside a €20 ticket
Since 1 March the ticket is the Grande Brera at €20, covering both the Pinacoteca di Brera and Palazzo Citterio, the modern and contemporary wing that opened on 7 December 2024. Under-18s free, EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay €4, and the first Sunday is free with a reservation.
The catch is opening hours that do not match. The Pinacoteca runs Tuesday to Sunday 08:30 to 19:15, last entry 18:00, closed Mondays. Palazzo Citterio opens only Thursday to Sunday, 14:00 to 19:00. A €20 ticket bought on a Tuesday can only be used for half of what it covers. The free half of Milan’s sightseeing
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a public passage, free and open, built between 1865 and 1877 to Giuseppe Mengoni’s design. Its floor carries four mosaic coats of arms, Turin’s bull, Rome’s wolf, Florence’s lily and Milan’s red cross, and the local tradition is to spin a heel three times on the bull, which wears the tiles through about once a decade.
The Cimitero Monumentale is free, Tuesday to Sunday 08:00 to 18:00, with free 20-minute guided visits from the Infopoint. The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie at Piazza di Santa Maria delle Grazie 2 is free to enter and is a separate building from the refectory that holds the Last Supper. Parco Sempione, the Castello courtyards and the exterior of the Bosco Verticale at Porta Nuova cost nothing.
The one ticket money cannot fix late
The Last Supper sells nothing at the door. €15 adult, €2 for ages 18 to 25, free under 18, and every category including the free ones needs a reservation. Maximum 40 people per 15-minute slot, Tuesday to Sunday 08:15 to 19:00 with last entry 18:45, closed Mondays. Collect at least 30 minutes before your slot or the ticket is void. Entry-only tickets were sold out for the rest of 2026 as of 1 September.
