Give it the overnight it actually needs and the math stops being the problem.

A Salzburg Overnight
The fastest Railjet Express connection runs about 2 hours 22 minutes each way, with regular Railjet services at 2h31-2h53 and the separate Westbahn operator at 2h28-2h38. Salzburg is a full historic city, not a quick stop, and staying overnight opens up the Altstadt beyond its main square and the Getreidegasse crowds. Turn the Wachau-Ticket’s train, abbey, and boat combination into two relaxed days instead of one long one by staying overnight in Krems or Dürnstein. The ticket itself runs somewhere between €51 and €68 depending on the source, book it through kombitickets.railtours.at directly, and the Krems-Melk boat leg has scheduled gaps in 2026, 28 March to 24 April and 5 October to 1 November, worth checking before you build a loop around it.
Imperial Vienna Plus a Day Trip
A common, workable shape: Schönbrunn, the Hofburg, and the Belvedere on day one inside the city, then Bratislava or the Wachau on day two once you’re already oriented. Bratislava alone is as close as 56 minutes away by train since the line’s 2025 electrification, close enough to add without much planning, and it works equally well as an overnight of its own if the pace of two capital cities in one day feels rushed.
