Multi-day Trips Mandalay Region

Travel advisory: Washington advises Americans not to travel to Myanmar for any reason, while the UK government advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing Region and the townships north of the city. Armed conflict, drone strikes, curfews and communications blackouts are ongoing, and the March 2025 earthquake damaged many historic sites. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.

Multi-Day Trips in Mandalay Region

Multi-day routes through Mandalay Region historically combined Mandalay city with nearby ancient capitals. Under current official advice these are not trips to plan, and the condition and access of the sites below are unconfirmed since the March 2025 earthquake.

Places such routes covered

• Mandalay city: Mandalay Palace, Zegyo Market and Shwenandaw Monastery. The palace was damaged in the earthquake.
• Mingun: in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Hsinbyume Pagoda was largely destroyed, and the Pahtodawgyi is damaged and closed to climbing.
• Sagaing Hill: known for its pagodas and monasteries, also in Sagaing Region.
• Inwa (Ava): an ancient capital. About three quarters of its historic structures were damaged, and the Maha Aungmye Bonzan (Me Nu) is nearly destroyed.

Practical notes

• Dress modestly at religious sites, remove shoes before entering temples and avoid pointing the feet at Buddha images.
• The dry season runs from about October to April.
