Munich Activities by Budget: Free to Splurge
You can fill a full Munich day for nothing if you know where to look. The city’s price ladder runs from free squares and parks to a €250 tasting menu, so here is what each rung buys.
Free
Marienplatz is the first stop. The Glockenspiel in the New Town Hall tower performs at 11:00 and 12:00 daily, with 32 life-size figures and 43 bells. Inside the Frauenkirche you can look for the Devil’s Footstep in the entrance floor. Viktualienmarkt has around 140 stalls to browse, and the Englischer Garten is bigger than New York’s Central Park. BMW Welt is free to enter, and so are the gardens of Nymphenburg Palace. Oktoberfest itself costs nothing to enter, though the 2026 edition ended on 4 October. The next Wiesn runs 18 September to 3 October 2027, and the official Oktoberfest rules on muenchen.de cover the bag limit of 3 litres.
At the Eisbach, at the edge of the Englischer Garten, experienced surfers ride a standing wave with a self-releasing leash, and none surf after 22:00. It is a spectacle to watch from the bank, and the water is not for swimming.
Under €10
A pretzel is €1.50 to €2.50, a Leberkässemmel €3 to €4.50 and a Weißwurst breakfast €6.50 to €9.50. A Maß at a self-service garden counter is about €8.50, and in Bavaria you may bring your own picnic food to the benches. Public transport sits here too: the Zone M single is €4.20, and the Kurzstrecke short hop is €2.10. A Single-Tageskarte at €10.10 pays for itself after three rides. Many stalls still prefer cash.
€10 to €35
The Residenz museum costs €10, the Treasury €10 and the combination €15. The Frauenkirche south tower is €7.50 (€5.50 reduced), and the Rathaus tower lift starts at €7. The Deutsches Museum charges €16 for adults and €9 for children and other concessions, with a €33 family ticket, per deutsches-museum.de . The BMW Museum is €17 (€9 concession, €38 family), and the BMW plant tour costs €24 (€20 reduced) and runs Monday to Friday. A traditional dinner of pork knuckle at an Augustiner restaurant costs €18 to €28.
Splurge
A Zugspitze round trip is €78 on the summer tariff to 22 November 2026, and zugspitze.de has the details. A Michelin-starred tasting menu at Tantris, Atelier or Tohru in der Schreiberei runs from €140 to €250 or more. Neuschwanstein is a day trip of about 3 hours each way, 125 km away, with a timed tour at €21 (€20 reduced) plus a €2.50 online fee.
Sundays and cash
Retail shops and supermarkets are closed on Sundays, so plan food shopping for Saturday. Restaurants, beer halls, morning bakeries and shops inside the main stations stay open. If you want a ready-made plan, you can compare Munich tours and tickets on GetYourGuide .
For specific kinds of outing, read the day trips guide or the Munich two-day itinerary .
Verdict: the best value in Munich is free: the Englischer Garten, the Glockenspiel and a self-service beer garden with your own bread. Save your euros for one ticketed highlight, such as the BMW plant tour or the Residenz.
