Odense is charming and low-key, which is exactly what makes it work for couples. The pull is the storybook old town, gentle walks by the river and good food rather than a resort or spa scene, so plan a slow day or two. Prices are in Danish kroner (DKK), not euro.

Walks by the river

Ease in with a stroll. Munke Mose and the Eventyrhaven (Fairytale Garden) beside the H.C. Andersen museum give free, central green space along the Odense River, good for an unhurried wander. The cobbled Latin Quarter, full of cafes and small shops, is made for drifting between coffee stops together.

Time on the water

For a shared outing, the Odense Aafart river cruise has run since 1882 and drifts from Munke Mose out to the Fruens Boge forest. Tickets are return, so you can step off in the woods and catch a later boat back; an adult return is about 125 DKK (verify), with a season of roughly April to October.

Art and culture

Brandts, Funen’s largest art museum, sits in a converted 1869 textile factory in the Latin Quarter and rewards an unhurried visit, with a cafe and art bookshop to pause in. It is an easy, relaxed cultural stop between meals.

Dinner and wine

Odense eats well for its size. Restaurant ARO is the city’s gourmet flagship (verify its current Michelin status before booking), and there are well-regarded spots such as Oluf Bagers Gard, Goma for omakase, HOS and Klosterkroen. For a more relaxed evening, the wine bars Anarkist Food & Beer Lab and Amy’s Bar & Winehouse are easy, and Storms Pakhus street-food market makes a low-key date over shared plates.

A day out together

For a classic couple’s excursion, Egeskov Castle near Kvaerndrup is about 30 minutes south. It is a moated Renaissance castle from 1554 with award-winning gardens and a hedge maze, a fine place to spend an afternoon (verify prices and season). Renting bikes to reach the river paths is another easy, local way to share a morning.
