Phnom Penh’s day trips split into two honest categories: reachable and not
Phnom Penh itself covers in 2-3 days, so the question after that is what’s actually within reach. Six spots qualify as real day trips; two don’t, no matter how they’re marketed. Kampot and Kep need an overnight, and Siem Reap’s Angkor Wat is a separate multi-day destination about 300km away. Below is what each one actually costs in time and money.

The closest option: Koh Dach
A short ferry across the Mekong reaches Koh Dach’s silk-weaving villages, no fixed entry fee, just transport (tuk-tuk plus the ferry crossing, a few dollars) and an optional bike rental to ride the rural lanes between workshops. It’s genuinely doable in half a day and back for a late lunch in the city.
Temples within an hour: Tonle Bati and Oudong
Tonle Bati combines a small Angkorian-era temple, Ta Prohm, with a lakeside stop, an easy half-day with a small entry fee at the temple itself. Oudong, Cambodia’s former royal capital about 40km northwest, means climbing roughly 500 steps to a row of hilltop stupas, budget a half to full day and bring water for the climb.
The fuller day: Kirirom and Phnom Tamao
Kirirom National Park, 100-120km southwest, is a real full-day trip once the 2-3 hour drive each way is counted, pine forest, waterfalls, and noticeably cooler air than the city. Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue, closer at 36-40km south, houses rescued elephants and other wildlife and is commonly combined with the Phnom Chisor hilltop temple nearby.
What isn’t a real day trip
Kampot and Kep, about 136km and 3-4 hours away, hold pepper farms and Kep’s crab market, worth the trip but not in a single day; plan an overnight instead. Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, roughly 300km and 5-6 hours by road (or a short flight), aren’t a Phnom Penh day trip under any itinerary, that’s a separate multi-day destination and deserves its own trip.

Hire a tuk-tuk driver for the closer trips (Koh Dach, Tonle Bati) and negotiate a return fare before setting out; Kirirom and Oudong are easier with a hired car or driver for the full day. Pack water, sunscreen, and small USD bills, few of these stops take cards.
