Two of the places people ask about as an Athens day trip aren’t really one: Meteora is 350km away, five times further than Cape Sounion.
Cape Sounion
About 70km southeast and roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car or KTEL bus , Cape Sounion is the easiest half-day on this list. The Temple of Poseidon itself only takes 30 to 45 minutes to see; most of the trip is the drive and the wait for sunset over the Aegean, which is the reason most people come.
Delphi
At around 180km and 2.5 to 3 hours’ drive, Delphi is a genuine full day rather than a half-day add-on: 5 to 6 hours in transit alone before accounting for time at the site itself, so don’t plan to stack another stop onto the same day.
Hydra, Aegina and Poros
Each of these Saronic islands is a real solo day trip by ferry from Piraeus, not Rafina. Hydra is car-free with a photogenic harbor, Aegina is the closest and has its own ancient temple (Aphaia), and Poros sits closest to the mainland. Pick one rather than trying to combine them if you actually want to see more than a harbor.
Nafplio and the Peloponnese loop
Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus and the Corinth Canal sit roughly 130 to 150km out, 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way, usually combined into one long guided day. Meteora doesn’t belong on this list
Meteora sits roughly 350km from Athens, 4 to 4.5 hours’ drive each way, meaning a same-day round trip means 13 to 14 hours in transit for only 4 to 5 hours actually among the monasteries.
