Real Romance in the Bay Islands, Honduras
The captain cuts the catamaran’s engine a few hundred meters off Half Moon Bay, right as the color drains out of the sky, and that’s the moment couples staying in West End actually book the boat for. Romance in the Bay Islands has very little to do with candlelit menus and almost everything to do with getting away from other people, on a set of islands small enough that “away” is still a short boat ride.
Sunset catamaran cruises out of West End and West Bay, run by operators like Catamaran Stray Cat and Roatán Yacht Charters, are the easiest version: fresh ceviche, rum cocktails, sometimes champagne, and dolphins riding the bow wake if you’re lucky. It’s a couple of hours, not a full day, which makes it the low-commitment option for a first or last night on Roatán, and it’s easy to book a sunset catamaran online before you land.
The bigger romantic move is a private day trip to Water Cay, off Útila. A wooden panga boat from Útila Town gets you to an uninhabited coral cay with white sand, coconut palms, and shallow, clear swimming water, and nobody else has to be part of the day unless you charter it that way. Pack your own lunch; there’s nothing to buy once you’re there, which is the point.
For dinner, West End and Sandy Bay both have dining rooms built for exactly this: The Lotus Restaurant at Xbalanque, Ibagari Beach Dining, Blue Ocean Reef, and Vintage Pearl Restaurant & Wine Cellar all put tables on docks over the water rather than facing a parking lot. Book ahead in high season; a table actually over the water is the reason to choose one of these over a regular beachfront restaurant.
If a spa afternoon fits the trip better than a boat, the Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort & Spa has open-air, thatched-roof overwater treatment suites at Iron Shore, and Ibagari Boutique Hotel in West Bay runs a similar setup on Tamarind Drive. Both are built for two people, not a resort spa menu serving forty guests at once. The Resort at Marble Hill, on the wild east end, is the option for couples who want distance from West Bay’s crowds more than easy access to it.
For a quieter beach day without chartering a boat, Camp Bay Beach on Roatán’s far east end is two miles of empty sand well past the cruise crowds at West Bay, with Camp Bay Lodge nearby for seafood afterward. Getting there means the drive across the island, so it works better as a half-day plan than an add-on to a busy dive day. Verdict: skip the generic sunset-cruise-plus-dinner package if you can only do one; the private Water Cay day trip is the one that actually feels earned, since it takes real effort to get there and nobody else shows up once you do.
One concrete tip: book the Water Cay panga and any overwater dinner table at least a few days ahead in dry season (March to September), when demand from divers and couples peaks at the same time.
