Romantic Getaways from Colombo on a Budget
The most romantic hour within reach of Colombo costs nothing at all: sunset from the ramparts of Galle Fort, with the sea on three sides. Getting there costs a train ticket. The rest of a getaway, the room, the dinner and the view, is where the money goes, and it is easy to spend wisely if you know which splurge to keep.
Galle Fort for the night
Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 90 minutes from Colombo by expressway or 2 to 2.5 hours on the coastal train, with an unreserved ticket at roughly LKR 300 to 800; check times with Sri Lanka Railways . Walking the ramparts at sunset, out to Flag Rock and the lighthouse, is free. Stay inside the fort walls rather than outside if the budget stretches; you can compare rooms in Galle on Booking.com .
The verdict: this is the best-value romantic getaway from Colombo. One night inside Galle Fort gives you a sunset, a dawn walk on the ramparts and the train ride both ways, and the only big cost is the room.
A Colombo evening that looks expensive
If you are staying in the city, two places deliver a big-night feeling without a big bill. Sunset drinks on the Chequerboard lawn of the Galle Face Hotel, open on the seafront since 1864, start at about LKR 2,000 to 3,500 a cocktail from 17:00; one drink each covers the flag-lowering at dusk. The Gallery Café on Alfred House Road, in Geoffrey Bawa’s former studio, is open daily from 10:00 to midnight, and a courtyard table is worth booking through Paradise Road for a weekend. Colombo’s harbour is a working port and naval base, so there are no dinner cruises to book.
Further out, for two nights or more
- Tea-country bungalows around Nuwara Eliya and Hatton: colonial planters’ houses among the estates. Prices vary widely, so compare carefully.
- Pidurangala at sunrise: a dawn scramble near Sigiriya for about LKR 1,000 each, with the light coming up over the forest and the lion rock in front of you. Open from 05:00.
- South-coast villas at Tangalle or Mirissa, where whale-watching trips run from November to April.
Where to save, where to spend
- Save on transport: the train is cheap and part of the romance.
- Save on lunch: rice and curry at a local eatery runs about LKR 350 to 750.
- Spend on one dinner: the Gallery Café or a crab at Ministry of Crab, which closes on Poya days.
- Spend on location: a room you can walk home from beats a cheaper one a tuk-tuk ride away.
Tips
- Poya, the monthly full moon, stops all alcohol sales; check the date before planning a sunset drink.
- From May to September the southwest monsoon brings rough seas and rain to Galle and the south coast; October to February is drier there.
- If you are staying in Colombo first, compare city hotels on Agoda near Galle Face, so the sunset is a walk away.
